Interesting to see all this "adult gameboy" marketing. They pulled the same shit with the DSi.

The gameboy itself had a lot of marketing towards older people, despite the name "boy". There was an advertisement with an older guy holding one in an airport. Even the gameboy was thought up when Gunpei Yokoi saw an older man fiddling with his watch on a train. Not even that, but one of the first games on the system was Mahjong, which would be like if Texas Hold 'Em was one of the first games in the US.

I love Game Tapes! Definitely the best feature, hope they come out more frequently!

Why would you choose easy mode? It was an easy game on Normal mode! I think Dan just never learned you have to tap the direction and press X to block, you don't hold the direction.

@spunkyhepanda: The reason they haven't is because the original director of the first 2 games (and Super Paper Mario) hasn't worked on the series since. I really wish they went back and tried to learn what actually made the series great in the first place, instead of just constantly going against what worked before.

The closest relative to birds which are not birds, is the alligator. So on an evolutionary scale, birds are closer to alligators than people and mammals.

Also, for Dan's sake. All matter has gravity. Everything does. It's just basically nonexistent unless you're as big or dense as a planet.

Sometimes, I feel like people blow the PS3's "failure" way out of proportion. Yes, almost everything about this was an incredible misstep. But it didn't doom the console for the entire generation; it didn't stay that way. I entered in late at 2010 with a PS3 slim, and I never had a single issue, complaint, or disappointment. It was a perfectly fine console. Still is. The fact that Sony managed to come from this mess and turn around the PS3, and then move onto the PS4 and what that is, shows they're capable of something. And, to be fair, the Xbone will probably manage to follow a similar path. Especially since that launch was not quite at the same level of mess as shown here.

But, more on topic - yeah this is kind of boring in its entirety. That sizzle reel of goofs makes it seem a lot more fantastical than it really is.

The PS3 had a very slow start. Everything was being developed with the 360 in mind, and all the PS3 had to offer was a handful of interesting games (some of which just shoehorned in tilt controls) and bad ports with terrible bugs or framerate. It wasn't dooming, but when people said "PS3 has no games" they meant that you have almost no reason to get a PS3 over a 360.

The 360 launched at $300 or $400, with the PS3 costing $500 or $600 with less games to show off and launching after the 360 to boot.

If Sony didn't have the brand awareness from the PS2 days, and the ability and cash to jump up and respond to Microsoft they would be in the same spot as Sega right now.

This is really cool! I would love to see more stuff like this about the game development process, but I think it would work better if the gameplay was prerecorded.

Dan, for the love of god do not use a controller on PC Overwatch just because you are too stubborn to get a M & KB setup, you are gunna get owned.

It's really not that bad. I've been playing with a controller on PC and it's totally fine, even when sniping. I'm just way more comfortable with a controller, using KB + M will end up hurting my hands.

I've heard that Mario Party 7 is the one when things finally get good.

Its the best one...

MP7 is actually really good. Well, for the standards of a Mario Party game at least. I played a ton of it when I was younger, which obviously means that grown men won't always have the most fun. Which is why Dan still loves them.

I agree too.

It's worth remembering that most of the vocal games press (and a considerable portion of outspoken devs) have adopted this hard-left, hyper-feminist stance on this sort of stuff. You know, the people who infantilize Western women and talk about them like they're a protected species.

I imagine it would be social and/or professional suicide for someone in a position like theirs to say something actually contrary - not to suggest they think other than what was said on the podcast, however. It's the same weird thinking that gets someone like Danny O'Dyer to suggest that a character's butt pose inevitably leads to more women being raped. Just an outrageous line and a fanatical bit of politicking.

But yes, it is a little tiring to be reminded of the double standards. What about someone like Adam Orth?

I have to agree as well. I imagine living in San Fransisco, where most of those ideas stir the most contributed a lot. It definitely seems like the Bombcast and O'Dwyer seem to think that protecting women is priority number one, which I wouldn't agree with. Of course everybody should be protected and feel safe, but not to the point that they can do no wrong.

O'Dwyer specifically saying "Really, not having the anime arse is a fair trade for not being raped as much" Is completely ludicrous. It's almost like him and everybody else would forget that violence in videogames has proven to not affect people years ago. Why would sexuality be any different?

On the Rapp part specifically, I don't think Nintendo can be bullied into firing somebody. Especially not by "harassing trolls". I'm sure Nintendo is confident in their decisions, or they wouldn't have done it.

I'm not sure how much more I should try and talk about, knowing that controversial posts often get removed here, but I wanted to give my two cents.

It's impressive, and it's absolutely valid to think about how something is made when you're reviewing it.

If you think "all that matters is what's in the game itself and torch all knowledge of anything else" is the way reviews should be, game criticism is doomed – we should all just pack it in, and not bother writing anything that isn't a simple pro/con lists and component scores. That's a dark path.

I disagree. It doesn't matter how big the dev team was, in every AAA release do you think they need to say how large the team size was or where it was made? I don't think so. It's obviously impressive, but it doesn't change the fact of the game as a product. In some cases it can be good knowledge, because Stardew Valley is still technically in development with the multiplayer mode coming later, but a game having a smaller team doesn't instantly make it better because it was harder to make. I'd focus on judging the game for its merits.
