I have always been a fan of the TT LEGO games, though I don't play every single one as they do tend to get boring and same-y. However, the original LEGO Star Wars has always held a place in my heart since I'm a huge fan of both franchises, and after trying the demo for this one it's clear that they've stepped their game up. This game does such a great job with world building, puzzles, and overall variety. All the huge battle scenes are intact and put you squarely in the middle of the action, and when it pulls in close for some cover-based shooting, it's surprisingly intense. I particularly love the dogfighting segments they've added, they've got really strong Rogue Squadron vibes.
The thing I love most about the game though, is how much they've fleshed out the universe of The Force Awakens. The hub worlds of Jakku, Takodana, the Millenium Falcon and others are all open and explorable, and the Star Wars geek in me really appreciated that since I can get immersed in these new (and old) places. It's actually giving me a lot more appreciation for the movie, seeing how well these new worlds fit into the overall universe, and I'm impressed at how they have made almost every scene from the movie playable. Pretty much any scene that isn't strictly dialogue is represented as a playable segment in the game, even very short ones like Rey surfing down the dune on Jakku or Finn fixing the Falcon after they escape. I'm also very interested in seeking out those gold bricks to get the hidden EU levels, it's so great that stuff was included here.
I was SUPER skeptical of this game when it was announced. I thought that full-price for a LEGO game that's only based on a single film sounded like a huge ripoff, but after seeing the attention to detail and sheer content they have in this game, I'm convinced. This is seriously a great package if you would call yourself a Star Wars fan and you don't mind playing a game with permalife. Yeah, I just made that term up. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a bit more challenge or a harder difficulty setting, but the game's strength and core gameplay is its puzzles and exploration anyway so I'm not too bothered about the whole no-losing thing.
I hope that they make 2 more games in the same vein for the next two movies and then make one ultra game with all the hubs on one world map, 700 gold bricks, and billions and billions of studs worth of junk to buy. Hell, throw in The Complete Saga with updated lighting and textures, and we've got ourselves the ultimate Star Wars toy game.
