GOTY 2013

What a weird year for video games. It seems like a lot more of this list than usual belongs to games that came out pre-Fall. I suppose that's probably caused by console launches and whatnot, but it was kind of nice to have some quality stuff spread out a little throughout the year. Speaking of console launches, this is the first year in quite a while that the Xbox 360 was not my primary video game platform. I finally got myself a PS3 and a 3DS and between them and my newly upgraded PC, I found myself spending a lot of time away from my primary video gaming home for the last 6 years. We had a good run, didn't we?

Some notable omissions:

Grand Theft Auto V - Haven't played it yet. Holding out for a PS4/PC port.

Tomb Raider - Only made it about an hour into this one before I decided to wait a week or two for improved graphics drivers and never got back around to it. Too bad, it looked kinda interesting.

The Wolf Among Us - Will be eligible for GOTY 2014. Really liked the first episode.

SimCity - Ugh. What a disappointment. This game should have been really awesome.

List items

  • What a delightful game. The videos are fun to watch, the music is great, and the gameplay is challenging and fun. I've already put around 30 hours into it and I'll definitely be coming back to it a lot more throughout next year.

  • Something about Rapture always weirded me out a little, so I could never bring myself to play either of the underwater Bioshocks. Fortunately, the change in scenery was exactly what I needed to get into this one, and I had a really good time. The combat scenarios were fun and varied and the story and voice acting did a great job of grabbing me and not letting go until the credits rolled. That ending was all I could think about for the next week.

  • I had never played a Fire Emblem game before, but I think I'm a fan now. The game always challenging but rarely unfair and it's incredibly satisfying to surgically clear a map without taking a single point of damage.

  • By far the most fun I've had with this series since Brotherhood. The boat stuff and the island exploration do a great job of mixing up the moment-to-moment action from the same old stuff we had been doing for the last several releases while still retaining the climbing and the stabbing. Between that, a likable main character, and some stealth missions that actually make you feel powerful and awesome, it's really good to see this series is back on track.

  • It's not as well-written or funny as the Previous Entry in the Saints' Row Franchise, but the side missions are structured in a way that makes you actually want to do them all and the ability to run ludicrously fast and fly are a lot of fun.

  • It's definitely a Quantic Dream joint, but if you go into it knowing what to expect, it's a good ride. Some of the story is a little nonsensical, but it's acted very well and I actually liked the non-linear way it was told. I even caught myself _feeling_ something a couple of times, so I guess that's a success for David Cage.

  • I'm one of those notorious people on the internet that insist that the first 150 are the only real Pokemon and everything else has been complete garbage. Needless to say, I have not been able to get into any of the games since Red/Blue. I don't know what exactly is different this time, but Y really worked for me and I had a good time once again beating small animals to within an inch of their life and keeping them in tiny prisons to fight one another at my bidding.

  • It does a great job of providing a lot more interesting stuff to do in Civ V while somehow not making it all completely overwhelming. That's about all you could ask for from a strategy expansion, right?

  • Having never really gotten in to the Starcraft multiplayer, I play these games mostly for the single-player and I was once again impressed with how well Blizzard does at making every single mission unique in some way. I'll definitely be back for round three.

  • I actually never played any of the single player, but I spent a number of hours playing through the co-op online with a friend. I still miss Chaos Theory and keep holding out hope for a Splinter Cell game in that style, but what Ubisoft has here is pretty enjoyable for what it is.
