Best Games of 2022

2022 was a surprising great year for video games. In fact, there are many other games that can easily make this list, but I can only pick 10. So, I'll make a quick list of honorable mentions you should not miss out on. Also a lot of these games can be played on services like Game Pass, so they are much easier to access at a reasonable price.

Honorable Mentions:

1. Citizen Sleeper: 2022 was a great year for point and click adventure games, and this game is one of many. The only reason its not on the list is because I've gotten around to playing it late, when compared to the games that did make the list.

2. Rival School Girls 2: Another great sequel that came out late December, and as a result, I didn't get enough time with it like the ones on the list. This game expands on everything that made the original game a surprise hit in the once dying beat'em up genre.

3. Signalis: A game that is a very well done homage to classic Resident Evil and Sci-Fi Anime.

4. Evil West: I've yet to play this game personally, but from what I've seen and heard, I know I will like it a lot once I do get around to playing it.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge: The game is a love letter to the classic Konami arcade TMNT games. If you likes those games, this one is right there in quality.

And many others I've yet to play but plan to like Pentiment, Neon White, and Infernax to name a few.

List items

  • This game came out of nowhere and took gaming by storm. The concept is simple, but addictive and fun. Your job is to simply run around, collect power ups and survive for 30 mins. No fancy button presses. No complicated puzzles. No filler. Just pick up and play. But what makes this game special is the different stuff you can unlock which makes replaying the loop worth it. The game also has many secrets you will discover that are exciting. This game reminded me how simple, yet well done gameplay is all you need for it to be special. Its also a great game to play when multitasking, from listening to podcast, to playing it while working out. Its a brilliant handheld game you can play while on break at your job, or any other public place you want to kill time. The uses are endless. And this is why its my number 1 this year.

  • This sequel to the already great God of War (2018) doesn't reinvent the wheel. It polishes and improves upon the game's already great foundation. From the presentation, gameplay, all the way to the story, this game is a masterpiece. If you can only play one character action game this year, make it this one. You wont be disappointed.

  • Elden Ring is what you get when you take the Dark Souls formula and apply it to an open world. And if you're a fan of From Software's recent games, then you might think this is a great thing. And you'd be right. Elden Ring is a fantastic open world adventure game. With amazing set piece places to visit. Epic boss battles. Huge variety of enemies to face. Lots of items and weapons to make different builds. Its a game very epic in scale, and should not be missed. Even many people who normally don't like Soul-likes ended up loving Elden Ring. And that is saying something.

  • Like God of War: Ragnarok, Forbidden West is a huge improvement upon the great foundation that was already built in Zero Dawn. The presentation is great, the gameplay has been improved, with more options and variety. And the story once again gives many shocking revelations.

  • Perhaps the best Zelda clone since the Hudson Soft Neutopia games that came out for the Turbografx-16. The game has lot of secrets to uncover. But in an innovative way, you're helped by unlocking an in-game strategy guild, like the ones you buy in a store. The presentation, especially the music is very well done. The game also has great accessibility options, in case the game gets too complicated for you while playing. All of these make Tunic a winner in my book.

  • A lot of great character action game sequels came out this year, and A Plague Tale: Requiem is another one on the list. Like the others mentioned, it improves upon the already great foundation of the original. The characters are given more focus in the story. And the presentation is even more gloomy, yet epic like in the first game. AND TONS AND TONS OF RATS!

  • Immortality to me is the best "search and discover" game that has come out so far. The game is about an up and coming actress who never gets her big break because she suddenly disappeared. The players job is to look through the three films she starred in but were never released to find clues. The result is one of the most unnerving and at times out right scary games I've played, and I've played a lot of survival horror games in my day. Don't miss it.

  • Norco is one of the best point and click adventure games in a year that seen a lot of good ones come out. The story is very complex that telling it might give away some spoilers, but its very well done and engaging. Combine that with an unique presentation and soundtrack, and you're playing something special. The combat segments

aren't that great, but luckily it doesn't break the game.

  • Speaking of point and click comes another game released in 2022. As Dusk Falls is easily one of the best "you choice matters" games ever released, because the choices you make really do change the direction of the story. Unlike many games that claim to do this, but really don't. The game also has an unique art presentation and a great story filled with many characters you will both grow to love and hate. If you like a good story where you choose the outcome, this game is a must play.

  • Metal: Hellsinger is a game that reminds me of great classic first person shooters like Painkiller. But this game has a nice hook where the music is perfectly in tuned to the action on screen and how well you do depends on how well you can stay in tune while wiping out the enemies on screen. The music itself being awesome also doesn't hurt.
