@gyozilla: Nope it's just dumb luck they did this, the only thing that's set is the weather on each calendar day as the weather is based on the real weather for the real locations on those dates. You get nothing for beating the game quickly, and I suspect their aim was for the game to be slow.
As far as I remember the only major date based thing in Shenmue 1 is if you take too long you get the bad end which , but the date is so far out the only sane way to see it is to keep messing up the warehouse bit. Most of the extra stuff is actually triggered more by exploration or by visiting certain characters. Shenmue 2 has a lot more stuff linked to dates based in it.
He didn't realise it was there the first time, or he'd presumably have taken hostages until Ryo's dad gave in. As for the whole thing about the mirror being better where it was that's true, but then it'd be a short game.
As a Shemue fan I am scared at how on point Vinny's observation is that all we do is wait and ask questions. It worked though...we're getting it!I'm enjoying this massively though.
@dovah To add to the list, they haven't found any of the items in Ryo's house including the torch he already owns, and his Saturn. They also didn't buy any snack items so haven't fed the cat or played the Tomato lottery for games. I'm trying to think if Shenmue 1 has any really weird unlocks after long quest lines in 2 you get the duck racing and one of the arcade machines after some crazy steps. Since they aren't visiting Fuk-san a lot, they've also not tripped a lot of the flashbacks.
Didn't start with Tom as promised so some people are going to be PISSED!! :p
EDIT: Wonder if Vinny finds out you only need to press Y to look at the notebook. Also, waiting around for places to open/events to occur at certain times in the early game is the worst part of Shenmue for me but it goes away for the most part later in the game.
Yeah though the game kind of wants you to start doing side stuff like the arcade, or the kitten, or visiting Fuk-san. By trying so hard to mainline it, they are missing the stuff that was intended to fill the gap. I mean I guess I am sure a lot of people played it that way, but some of the best content is there.
