This definitely got my blood up so it's definitely in spirit with Games of the Year past. It's a good reminder of the fun and total exhaustion of GOTY. As the years have gone on I've come to appreciate the staff personal top 10s the most, as well as the sense of gathering together at the end.
The things that sour me on raytracing is the part where computational cost follows market cost for graphics cards. Right now a fancy GPU is still too expensive for most people to appreciate and we're already butting up against what a mass audience is able to discern quality-wise with these new consoles.
That and it might knock us down to 30FPS land again which would be a bummer. Hopefully the option for that will become standard and you can always get performance modes back for it.
Although this is all academic if the process of how devs put in the work is not actually better supported from an organizational level.
I know he was likely just joking but Alex saying entrepreneur is synonymous with scumbag is a very naive take. Entrepreneurs are also responsible for an awful lot of job creation and are not all robber barons. Try not to just parrot your anti capitalist twitter friends please.
Funny way to spell bourgeoisie but that's french for ya.
Honestly if the Game Awards went away I would miss it 0%. BAFTA's seem like the awards that actually have interesting choices and provide a platform for variety, DICE is already your AAA love-in among big company members, and so on with IGF and GDC.
All the Game Awards ever had was a TV deal and business connections so it's in-keeping with the brand to morph into a debut focused show. I agree with Alex, just go full in on the trailer part and forget the awards.
Especially when the awards are just going to be used to launder shitty labor practices at big game studios.
