This will be my weekly game flashback, where I re play an old favorite from my past
This week is Low G Man by KID for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This is by far one of my favorite games for the NES
Epic Introfor several reasons, one being the story. Low G Man is a futuristic tale of LGM's journey to stop an alien race's attempt to weaken humanity's grip on the galaxy, basically stop invading robots. Sure it was vague, you had no idea who Low G Man was, or how he got his "power" but who's to say a story about stopping evil robots from galactic domination needed more then a few words?
Weapons and Powerups are here, with some powerups upgrading your jump hight (which really wasn't all that special to begin with, but who the hell doesn't like jumping higher thenSuper awesome Box Art! the screen?) Instead, what Low G Man focuses on is a pretty neat little system of combat. Your basic gun doesn't damage foes, but instead temporarily freezes them. When an en emy is frozen, you can stand under or jump on top of it and press the attack button along with either up or down on the control pad to slam a spear into it. Most weaker enemies are frozen with one or two shots from the gun and killed with one or two pokes with the spear. Bosses take more of both, obviously, but as you weaken them with the spear, it takes fewer and fewer shots with the gun to put them back "on ice". Or, alternatively, there are a handful of enemies that drop sub-weapons upon death. Pressing the select button lets you toggle between the freeze gun and whichever of the four alternate weapons you're currently using (determined by hitting the start button and picking one). Oftentimes, blasting folk with these can be far easier than the "freeze and stab" method of killing them.
It's a fun and enjoyable game even now after ALL these years, and will be for years to come! My only wish is to see it remade for this gen or next, possibly open world Mario style, the story could be ramped up and even added to or slightly changed given that it was so vague to begin with. I you still own an NES and have yet to play it, get your hands on it, since it really is a good retro game.
