The Best Games I Played in 2020

List items

  • Animal Crossing was *the* game that defined the early quarantine era. The tropical island was the perfect escape for the millions stuck inside of their homes. While it didn't have the staying power for me to keep playing throughout the year, those first few months obsessing over turnip prices were absolutely magical.

  • I'm not big into RTS or stealth games, but Shadow Tactics seems like the perfect mix. While the story is a fairly generic samurai tale, the gameplay more than makes up for it. You can control 5 characters which each have their own unique abilities suited for every situation. Levels are meticulously designed, and the ability to quick save and quick load at a buttons press encourages experimentation.

  • https://www.giantbomb.com/profile/barthvader25/blog/persona-3-fes-memento-mori/152683/ I wrote about this game, and I absolutely loved it. Engaging RPG combat, a memorable story, and fleshed out characters.

  • There were a few months this year where all I played was Overwatch with my friends. This is one of the most fun games to play with your friends, and the addition of the workshop and custom games make for some truly hilarious experiences. Even after nearly five years since its release, this is still one of the most fun shooters out there. (just don't turn on voice chat)

  • Astro's Playroom is only a few hours long, but all of those two to three hours are filled with pure delight. The game uses the controller in ways I didn't even know a controller could do. Tons of cute PlayStation references are crammed in the game, and it keeps you coming back with the speedrun levels and always trying to beat your previous time.

  • Playing this on the Nathan Drake collection with my family watching was one of my best gaming experiences this year. Tons of absolutely insane set piece moments, a basic yet compelling story, and some of the best writing I've seen in a game. While the shooting is fairly basic with a third person cover system, the addition of new guns throughout the game keeps it fresh. I'm really looking forward to playing the rest of this series.

  • I played the remastered version on the PS5, and as a huge Marvel fan this game is such a delight. The combat just flows perfectly together with all of your moves and gadgets, the story is a classic superhero story that does the job perfectly fine, and traversing across New York is just so much fun. I played most of the game in performance mode as swinging across New York in 60 fps is just amazing, but the ray tracing in fidelity mode just looked incredible.

  • Miles Morales takes everything great about Spider-Man, and then cuts all the fat. Way less random collectibles, no MJ stealth missions, none of that. Just pure Spider-Man. Miles Morales is a much more personal story, with a focus on family and the bad guys threatening his neighborhood, Harlem. The side quests gives you a feel of what it's like in Spanish Harlem, and gives personality to many of the side characters. The addition of venom powers and removing many of the unnecessary gadgets makes the combat even more smooth than it was before. And the character of Miles, just so much exaggerated swagger, what can i say.

  • I think Hades is the first roguelike (or roguelite I have no clue tbh) I've played, but it's gotten me absolutely hooked. The combat is just so satisfying, each of the weapons creates a completely different experience, and the writing and voice acting is just amazing. What can I say about this game that hasn't been said. I've done around 30 runs and still haven't beaten the final boss, but I'm sure that I'll keep playing and trying to improve after the credits roll.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn will definitely go down as one of my favorite games of all time. I just love everything about this game, Aloy, the world, the combat, the machines, the story that keeps you trying to figure out the mysteries of this world. Only problems I have with the game are some boring side quests as well as the facial animations. The story is just simply incredible and I am so so so looking forward to Forbidden West. Please let us ride flying machines, Guerilla, please.
