Man, from the setup, I was like "this sounds a bit like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles," and then Austin proceeded to name drop it a few minutes later. Glad to know my theatre of the mind is functioning correctly :P

Excited to listen to the rest of this! (and thanks to Austin for spending the time/effort to run this).

Real whiplash on that fall trap. "oh, get to move down a level for free" to "ahhhhhhhhh how do i get out of here". Good run though, I believe in you adventurer!!!

Also I love DJ Vinny on these videos, adds a very fun element with the music choices.

Great video, looking forward to the subsequent episodes!

Amazing video, great concept for a series. I've never dabbled in pure OG Rogue but my favorite traditional Roguelike is probably still Dungeons of Dredmor. Now I have that urge to reinstall after not having played it for a few years.

I also haven't played Dredmor in many years, but I remember it being pretty great. The Shiren the Wanderer games are probably my favorite in the more traditional roguelike genre. The Vita one (which is being ported to PC/Switch now) is really great, and I also love the DS game, which is a nice remake of the Super Famicom entry.

Enjoyed your writeups here! I think you really hit the nail on the head as to why Spelunky 2 did not click for me (and this is coming from someone who played an inordinate amount of OG Spelunky). I was having trouble figuring out in my head what the deal was, but I think the "density of threats" being ramped up is exactly why. It feels crammed with nonsense and obtuseness just for the sake of it; I don't know if I will ever actually finish a run of that game or not.

I've seen a couple people mention this Helltaker game now. Looks to be free (!) on Steam and seems up my alley, I think I will check it out!

And I TOTALLY agree with you on Hades; I actually said some similar things in my GOTY list, but you expounded on it even more.

Glad to see a fellow Carrion-head, I really loved that game - also on my GOTY list :)

Man, I've been making these GOTY lists on the site for a decade now, I just realized. Time flies.

Anyways, if anyone wants to read my yearly ramblings about the games I liked, here are my thoughts. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to peruse.

The game Vinny plays is literally the exact same concept as Lost in Shadow on Wii.

Yeah, I made this comment on the latest Beastcast where he was describing the game, saying it sounded very similar. Having now seen the game in action, I agree even more.

1) Samantha is a great guest. Feels like forever since she has been on some GB content. Congrats on the cool new job!

2) That Shady Part of Me game sounds like a whole-cloth copy of Lost in Shadow for the Wii, even down to Vinny saying he liked the idea of the game, but the execution didn't really grab him (which is exactly how I felt about Lost in Shadow).

I can tell I'm old and out of the loop because apparently an internet word that I have no idea what it means was banned.

I don't know why, but the first game this reminded me of is Crash Commando, which was a PS3 downloadable online deathmatch 2D shooter that I doubt anyone but me remembers, haha. The perspective and shooting just seems very similar, and I played a surprising amount of it.

EDIT: Apparently Jeff reviewed this game for GB! Boy, must have been pretty close to the start of the site.

This game is very fun and quite difficult; I really like all the new mechanics and playable characters! Trying to get all the boxes on some of the levels has been a real doozy. That Food Run level Vinny showed off near the end is already pretty hard, trying to get all the boxes almost broke me (but I did it!!!)

I might try to 100% this, we'll see if my patience holds up. There is definitely a lot to do between perfecting all the levels, doing the time trials, doing the reverse levels, and completing the flashback tapes. I don't think the flashback tapes are retreads of old levels, I think they are just self-contained little challenges (which I have been enjoying) with this backstory about Crash being experimented on by Cortex??? I don't know if this bit of lore is new or not, haha.

Vinny, these were not "baby or mercy checkpoints". You didn't have checkpoints in the beginning because you were doing the time trial.

The mercy checkpoint thing IS a mechanic in this game, I've definitely gotten them on some of the later harder levels. But you are correct, in that instance, it was because he was in the time trial.
