Games I Finished in 2017

some of these are from the end of 2016...I got to my 100-item limit on my 2016 list. Whoops!

List items

  • A brief but fun Shantae game. The upgraded visuals are really nice! I miss the ease of use of abilities from Pirate's Curse, but dancing is sort of Shantae's thing, so going back to the transformation menu where she dances through the options makes more sense thematically.

  • Never played the original SNES game, but this game is excellent. I love the style, soundtrack, and mechanics. Lot of fun, and very replayable.

  • Really loved this game, and the last 20 minutes are delightfully insane and cathartic.

  • Pretty enjoyable, for what it is.

  • Can be a bit repetitive, but the combat feels really great.

  • Cool idea for a game.

  • Did my own blue bombin' :)

  • Reminiscent of old-school stealth games like Tenchu. The shadow teleportation mechanic is really neat and helps to differentiate the game.

  • I like the new mechanics they added to this game with the multi-builds and blaster combat.

  • Not my favorite point-and-click adventure game - the main character is a little too grating for my taste.

  • Played through the PS4 remaster in anticipation for the sequel. Still a great game!

  • Some of the most fun I have had in a video game in a long time - excited to dip into the rest of the series.

  • Somehow way way better than the first game - characters, setting, new mechanics all really elevated this for me.

  • Bad, even for a "kid's game". Checkpointing is terrible, story super boring. Gameplay is just fight after fight after fight.

  • Great, challenging game that uses its simple mechanics to the fullest. My only complaint is that the last world might be the biggest difficulty spike I've ever seen in a game - it took me longer to finish than the rest of the game combined.

  • Surprisingly awesome! It's like Sonic had a baby with Trials and your motorcycle is your butt.

  • A straightforward but solid shmup. Being able to upgrade your ship permanently and then replay levels that were quite difficult initially is satisfying/

  • The story is nonsense, but the gameplay is better than it has any right to be.

  • A surprisingly good story coupled with solid hack-and-slash gameplay.

  • Really enjoyed this one - the second half of the game falters a bit in terms of turning into a bit of a shooting gallery, but overall a great RE installment.

  • Nothing but praise for this one.

  • Working through playing some of the older Ace Attorney games. The circus case in this game is an all-time favorite of mine.

  • An amazing experience. I think future games will be copying a lot of this game's very interesting design aspects.

  • One of the easier roguelikes to actually "beat", but stil enjoyable. Really love the soundtrack.

  • A solid farewell to an excellent little series of puzzle games.

  • A great retro-styled game that uses modern game physics to make locomotion very fun and challenging.

  • An all-time great video game, for sure. And so much of it only works as a video game, which is even more impressive.

  • There's an insane amount of content in this game, I'll never finish it all, but I've played dozens of hours of it at this point. Just a great little game to get into a delightful angry zen state :)

  • Didn't really care for this game, got bored of it pretty quickly.

  • Great little "one more day!" timesink that really hearkens back to classic Harvest Moon games.

  • An even better version of the first DQH (which I quite enjoyed). Far and away the best Musou-styled games Omega Force has made.

  • A quite enjoyable new old JRPG. Loved the piano soundtrack!

  • Fantastic remake!

  • Enjoyed this more than expected - felt like an NES Castlevania for the modern age, with a rocking soundtrack.

  • Finally got around to finishing the adventure mode in this (some of the levels are brutal! The AI seems challenging across the board).

  • This is probably my favorite of the recent resurgence of old-school adventure games. Great writing and characters, and quite varied scenarios / puzzles across the five chapters.

  • Challenging but really fun and satisfying co-op game. My wife and I had a blast with this game.

  • A nostalgia throwback, both good and bad. I really enjoyed Banjo-Kazooie growing up, so this scratched that itch for me. Liked it enough to 100% the game :)

  • What a looooong game. I liked the structure of the plot, going to all this different places with their own stories, and how it all comes together. Some the archaic parts of the gameplay wore on me, even as someone who enjoys JRPGs.

  • This just might be my favorite of Housemarque's ever-expanding catalog. Looks, sounds, and feels great, and is a blast to play and try to get better at.

  • Decided to replay this game w/my wife, since she really loves point-and-click adventure games. The animation and sound design are still top notch. This game still holds up really well, and the puzzles in the back half of the game weren't as obtuse and difficult as I remember.

  • This was interesting, at least. A little too guided for my taste. Was paced well and never left me bored, but it really goes off the rails (narratively) at the end into some real Lynch-ian territory.

  • Really enjoyed this, especially since it has a solid single-player campaign, and doesn't completely rely on multiplayer. Even bot matches are fun! Feels like a more fast-paced version of a Worms game.

  • Best SW in a long time. Focusing on one clan/family actually gave the story a lot of impact.

  • Janky kart racer.

  • Really liked the story in this one.

  • Despite the silly name, this was a pretty solid Metal Slug-like with some nice animation and fun run & gun gameplay.

  • Pretty good arcade water racer. The last few levels are insanely hard though, I sorta gave up near the end after myriad attempts. Sucks when you have to win a tournament where the boss AI always gets 1st place unless you do.

  • Surprisingly challenging yet simple yet fun riff on an Angry Birds-type game.

  • Finally conquered the Ziggurat!!!

  • This is my new favorite roguelike. - gameplay is challenging and fun moment-to-moment. You are provided almost perfect information up front, which allows you to plan each stage out in a way that makes the randomness feel fair.

  • Really fun goofy co-op game.

  • One of the less good Musou games I have played in recent memory, especially in comparison to Dragon Quest Heroes 2 and Spirit of Sanada.

  • Really cute and charming point-and-click adventure. Wish it was longer though :(

  • Really great, unique co-op game that works well on the Switch. Hopefully they will release more levels as DLC.

  • Finally beat this game after being stuck on the sniper boss for forever, don't know why that was such a major hurdle for me. Really great game with tight combat I can see myself returning to.

  • Pretty unique rhythm game, sort of reminded me of Elite Beat Agents (mechanically speaking).

  • Really neat remake of an NES game I have a fondness for.

  • Really great loot-based RPG (even better than Diablo 3, I would say!)

  • Only iteratively better than the first, but still an amazingly fun time.

  • Really cute game with a nice mix of combat and micro-management / town building.

  • Really great Dirt game, good mix of accessibility and simulation-type racing. Lots of different modes and campaign levels.

  • Can't believe that this game actually turned out as well as it did. Really great mix of old and new.

  • My favorite point-and-click that I've played in a long time. Funny as hell, with some clever puzzles, and a fantastic in-game hint system for those times when you need just a little nudge as of what to do.

  • Really cool world-building going on here, with some interesting mechanics and puzzles that only rarely verge on frustrating.

  • This game has styyyyle. (and simple but fun gameplay to boot)

  • Cute little game with a neat hook.

  • One of those rare throwbacks that does the game better than the original (in this case, Ghouls n' Ghosts).

  • Less a walking simulator, and more a talking simulator. Luckily the voice acting is great, and the rapid pace of the conversations really keeps you engaged and invested. Story is cool, reminds me of a teenage spooky story you might see on "Are You Afraid of the Dark?"

  • Yakuza is still great. Awesome remake that really adds a lot of emotional weight through the extra Nishki scenes.

  • Didn't love this, felt like a bad version of Gunpoint.

  • Great art and music, some light puzzling that was still satisfying, and an interesting story.

  • This game fucking rules so hard. What a great tactical stealth game! It gives you all the tools you need to succeed, and a safe space to experiment and fail with no penalty (saving / loading are super quick!) The art is gorgeous, and the story is actually good too. I really loved everything about it.

  • A prettier, more robust version of the first game. The gameplay loop is still addictive as hell and a lot of fun.

  • This game is way more awesome than it has any right to be. Definitely biggest surprise 2017.

  • <3 <3 <3

  • Pretty chill but enjoyable little crafting / exploration game.

  • Really fun world to explore with a fun assortment of characters.

  • I was worried about this game being more combat-focused, but it works well, and still has that trademark exploration.

  • Had never heard of this game, but it's basically the parkour of Mirror's Edge turned up to 11, and plays like a dream.

  • Fun little Robotron / Gauntlet mashup.

  • Had an awesome time with the newest Ys game. Everything is great except for some translation weirdness (which they are patching). 60 hours well spent!

  • I knew this game was weird, but it really goes some places. The puzzle difficulty was just right for an adventure game, never had to look up any solutions, but it also didn't feel too easy.

  • A couple really great levels in here, and a lot of great environmental storytelling in general.

  • Loved loved loved this game! Really fun and well-written, good mix of golfing and non-golfing activities.

  • One of the most unique games I have had the pleasure of playing. On paper, it doesn't sound like it should be that fun (visual novel + religious basketball), but both parts of the gameplay are really well executed. And it is so well written, with characters that I really cared about, in a unique world that is really fleshed out.

  • This is a really great throwback 16-bit style RPG. The battle system is so, so good, and allows for some really cool synergies.
