Bennyishere: Best of 2010

List items

  • Mass Effect 1 is my favorite game of all time, so this was easy. I liked the story in Mass Effect 1 more, mostly because it focused on Saren and Reapers, while Mass Effect 2 was more about the Collectors, which I did not like. Still, Mass Effect 2 was great. The gameplay is undoubtedly better, and with the exception of Jack I welcomed all the new characters.

  • I am a sucker for good motion-capture, and this is one of the few games where I wanted to play more because I couldn't wait to see what would happen narratively. The combat was not very varied, and the ending left more to be desired, but this is easily overshadowed by the way characters interacted and how I mostly just wanted to see the two main characters give each other a big hug...

  • I feel like I was the only one who loved this game. People apparently didn't want more BioShock and thought the story was bad. I actually liked this game very much and felt a bit of a heartache whenever people hated on it. And for that it deserves a high spot on the list. The multiplayer was a bit shitty, but I really loved the singleplayer.

  • I'm not really a fan of Westerns. That's why I never got hyped for this game. That apathy remained for most of the game, but in the later parts of the game I came to realize how good it actually was. It's also one of the few games I've played where I was sure it was going to end... and then it didn't. And I was happy about it.

  • Been a fan of Splinter Cell since the first one. Conviction was the first to really change things up, and luckily none of it was for the worst. And with the Co-op and challenge modes, the value isn't bad either.

  • I had two problems with Fallout. First of all I had played a lot of Fallout 3 and did not welcome the lack of a graphical update. Secondly the latter part of the game, especially the fact that you had to choose between quests, was not something I enjoyed. Still, the addition of realistic weapons was nice, and I played it in Hardcore mode which made it even more different than Fallout 3. Also there's a dude called Benny in it with a flashy suit.

  • The singleplayer was atrocious. It's one of the few games where I did not welcome the cutscenes at all and felt like it interrupted my gameplay. Yet, the multiplayer was amazing. Although the multiplayer is occasionally broken, mostly by helicopters circling around your spawnpoints, the gameplay was still quite amazing with a large amount of weapons. Most importantly the DLC support is great, with everything from map packs to a Vietnam expansion, which puts other multiplayer shooters to shame.

  • The greatest thing Black Ops did was make me stop camping. In Modern Warfare 2 I was a camping bastard, running 7-11-25 killstreaks and going to specific spots to overlook areas. In Black Ops this just stopped. It might have been because I became a more confident gamer, but I think it's also because of the level designs being better for running and gunning. While the singleplayer was a bit bad in spots (I'm on a boat!), I still liked it more than in Modern Warfare 2. I am also a fan of applying sunglasses dramatically.

  • My thumb hurts. I am not a fan of the inclusion of enemy characters in the later levels. It kind of broke the game for me. The trial and error wasn't fun anymore because you stopped failing because of poor timing and started failing because somebody ate you. Still, the levels leading up to it were great. And the amount of levels you get is just ridiculous. Great music, great art, great gameplay!

  • How about that ending, huh? Yeah, I know... I couldn't help but compare it to Braid, which had a great ending. That only made it more disappointing. Still, it was an incredibly charming game. This might have been because of my TV's speakers, but I especially loved the sound. The big industrial noise that felt like it shaked the entire room made the game very eery in spots. I like eery.

Would have put Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition on here, but the PC version came out in 2009. I was very pleased with that game.

Is it your 2010's 2009 game of the year?
