GOTY 2012

Video games!

List items

  • Trust Firaxis to make turn-based games that are addictive and so incredibly fun. Turn-based games for me is about being calm, siting back and making good decisions. But when you are cornered by two cyberdisks and a sectopod, all the thinking time in the world won’t save you from going “OH SHIT!”. Compelling action both out in the field and in the base and the interplay between the both is just astounding, and it is my personal favourite game of 2012.

  • I only began playing this game this month, and I fell in love from the first minute. It has such an incredible amount of depth, and it is still easy to get into. Leaning back and watching your duchy (or kingdom/empire for that matter) expand over the years is amazing, and as far as I know, is the only game where your 1 year old can get assassinated by a jealous aunt.

  • Far Cry 3 evolves on the concepts that made it's predecessor an interesting game, but manages to make them enjoyable rather than tedious and obnoxious. A great game top to bottom, and once of the best video game experiences of 2012.

  • Mark of the Ninja doesn’t give you any cheap shots. Thanks to the clear visual representation of the sound you make and the vision of the enemies, stealth in this game is made incredibly satisfying. You know why and how you got spotted, so you never really feel cheated by the game. Oh, and the graphics are stunning.

  • I did not like earlier True Crime games, so when True Crime game switches publishers and name, my hopes are not exactly high. But goddamnit, Sleeping Dogs is a great game. It might be a mix of its qualities and my suprise that it actually had qualities that made me like it so much, but it has earned its spot on my list.

  • Calling Dishonored a mix of Skyrim, BioShock and Assassin’s Creed is selling it short. Dishonored is as much as great game as it is a challenge for your psyche, as it gives you an arsenal of things to kill your opponent, but rewards you for being stealthy and leaving your enemies alive.

  • Forza Horizon is the perfect driving game. It is a mix of great cars, great control and great graphics. Its story is short enough for anyone to finish, but also leaves a lot of content for the one that wants to go deeper.

  • You know its been a good year for games when a Diablo title only makes it onto my list at eight place. It’s a feast of loot, leveling, blood and demons, fitting for Diablo fans old and new.

  • The ending of Mass Effect 3 might’ve spawned a hell of a lot of “controversy”, and they might’ve been right. But I cannot forget the great game I played (right up until the ending), a game that is just as good as any of the previous games in the franchise.

  • Syndicate is a great shooter that doesn't overstay its welcome. Thanks to a "short" single player, the mechanics of the game doesn't get old and the entire experience feels fresh. Coupled with a very entertaining multiplayer component, and boss battles accompanied by dubstep, Syndicate is one of the best games I've played this year.
