Top 10 Games of 2016

As bad as 2016 was for me personally, and the world, it was a great for games. Even if it was Nintendo's worst year, there were many great ones. So much so I didn't play all, so sorry for missing out Fire Emblem Fates, Dishonored 2, Watch Dogs 2 etc.

List items

  • I'm going to go far and away and say this game has the best first person jumping controls since Metroid Prime (and to a lesser extent Dying Light). Oh yeah, and you get to pilot a giant robot, too.

  • For being my first Doom game I have ever played, even I can appreciate what went into the making of this badass experience. Perfecting the old school level design and frenetic gameplay first hones in Wolfenstein: New Order, but taken to a whole new bloody level. Even if the multiplayer faltered, it doesn't take anything from the fabulous campaign.

  • Perhaps my most predictable choice for a #1 game since The Last of Us, but considering the amount of hours I spent on a game, on a genre I am not that good at, is a testament on how addicting and exhilarating Overwatch is. The personality oozes from every corner of the game, from characters, maps and even the backstories outside of the game world made sure that Overwatch did not only conquer 2016, but it will go strong into the years to follow.

  • The movie was bad. No ways around it. It was discombobulated, devoid of character and erratically paced, which sadly leads to the story of the game itself. However, that is the only negative, as the rest of the game is perhaps the best played game in the series yet.

  • Jonathan Blow's The Witness tantalized my mind more than any game I have ever played. The simple act of drawing a line in a maze from one point to another has been brought to its most complex yet satisfying plateau. By far my favorite indie game of 2016.

  • Ok, Sam is not a good character. The combat mechanics got gimped. The pacing felt slower and meandering. So why is this game on this list? Well, while being my biggest disappointment of the year, it was still an enjoyable romp. Better shooting and enjoyable hook mechanics aside, storytelling was still excellent, and the final boss encounter was one of the best the entire year. At the very least, the multiplayer is what really edged this game to be on this spot.

  • Taking a lot of risks from the last generation of Pokemon, and while some of them didn't work, the greater emphasis on character, both the world and the story, made it stand out above its predecessor.

EDIT: Now that Ultra Sun and Moon are out, it sort of render the orginal games somewhat unnecessary with the newer games offer all the exclusives beforehand with little changes to the actual narrative. Hence why it's much lower now.

  • SUPER. HOT. SUPER. HOT.

  • After waiting for more than 7 years, it's hard to live up to the hype especially after the masterful Shadow of the Colossus. The camera, controls and somewhat dopey AI can hurt the experience. But the story, puzzles and captivating moments are what will always remain in my mind, and those alone make this game worth playing.

  • Still don't get the story or the battle system, but then I realized I spent 50 hours on this game that engrossed me from the very beginning. It made me salivate over digitized pictures of food. Isn't that something?
