It's weird to say, "watching people play video games is an important part of my life." But it is; Giant Bomb is important to me, and I've shared that love of GB with multiple people over the years. (It's not actually weird. At least, it's not any weirder than sharing a love of, say, cooking shows.) When I introduce people to GB, one of the sort of disclaimers I have to make is something like, "Yeah, I know it's almost all dudes, but it's not a boys' club thing." It's video games, so I think seeing half a dozen dudes on camera is gonna make people wary, and there's plenty of good reason for that wariness. Having someone else's voice represented on the team isn't necessarily gonna make or break it, but it can affect how people enjoy or relate to thing. All of this, worded imperfectly as it is, is just to say that Jess getting laid off is a bigger loss than just losing someone who makes content here. It simultaneously erodes faith in the brand and limits a portion of the potential audience.
