Favorite Games of 2009
Since 2009 is not yet over, this is my favorite games of 2009 so far. I'll add games as I play them and will eventually make this my definite best of 2009 list after I've played most everything from 2009.

This is a worthy successor to Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night (the reigning kings of their composite genre). I could count on one hand the number of games I've beaten 4 times. This is one of them.
I don't like tower defense games and I played this game 40 hours. That should count for something.
I completely missed this game until I played the Special Edition on the PC. I'm no adventure game expert (I haven't played Day of the Tentacle or Maniac Mansion for crying out loud!), but I can completely understand why this is so beloved. The puzzles and writing felt surprisingly fresh and inventive.
The single-player and co-op games are essentially 2 games in one. The punishing levels only make the game more satisfying when you finally finish it.
The fact that many people read the word "disappointment" in reviews and consequently skipped playing this game is shameful.
The most visceral first-person brawler I've played (you thought it would be Escape from Butcher Bay, didn't you?).
This reminded me how much I love the scope of the campaign and the weapon-balancing of Halo games. The interesting narrative definitely serves the Halo setting well. I've gotten back into Halo 3 multiplayer because of this game.
It removed the ambiance I liked so much in the previous RE games, but the addition of co-op was very welcome.
The beauty of this game is how seamlessly you can use 3 different skill sets and how necessary each one is to progress through the game.
The full range of motion in this zero-g FPS is truly liberating. As an independent game that only runs on a high-end machine running Vista or Windows 7, it's a definitive niche game . It's a shame it'll get overlooked in the same season that L4D2 and Modern Warfare 2 are released despite its $20 price tag.
HONORABLE MENTION: I'm adding this--likely until L4D2 comes out--as an honorable mention since I didn't really get into it until 2009 and since it did introduced new content (the Crash Course campaign and the Survival game mode) this year.
