My only fear is if this is a limit of the IR hardware they are using and not just a prototype limitation this would mean the field of view is more limited in the dark.

So I noticed in every tech demo of Kinect 2 every time they switch off the lights and show off IR mode the video is 4:3 on the screen where it was 16:9. Limitation of the hardware for the prototype?
