Game of the Year 2014

Has it already been a year? It feels like I made last year's list only yesterday! Okay, maybe not yesterday, but still. This year, I didn't play a lot of the big releases. No Shadow of Mordor, no Call of Duty, no Dragon Age, but as always, I had a lot of fun with what I did play.

List items

  • There's an old saying: "Your first Mario Kart is your favourite." Indeed, for a long time, Mario Kart 64 was my favourite. But then this game came out. I spent a lot of time playing this game with my wife, and I think she spent an even longer time playing it than me! There's a great sense of speed, the tracks are varied and fun, and the online play, for me, was pretty much flawless. Mario Kart 64 will always be near and dear to me, but Mario Kart 8 surpasses it.

  • Settle it in Smash! Is it a fighting game? Is it a party game? It doesn't really matter, because it's fun all the same! I had a great time playing this, because I actually feel like I'm good at it. It's easy to learn any characters moves, which is great for people like me who don't want to "main" a character. Speaking of characters, there's a buttload of 'em. Tons of different modes, billions (probably) of trophies, and an infinite amount of fun.

As a side-note, the 3DS version, while passable, doesn't hold a candle to the Wii U's HD beauty and controller options.

  • I wanted to like Dark Souls II more than the first game, and for a while, I did. But as I played more and more of it, I found that the original is the superior game. That's not to say that this game is bad! Not at all! Much like Dark Souls, the music and atmosphere are top notch. There are so many weapons and play-styles to choose from, that second and third (and fourth? Fifth?) playthroughs are almost mandatory. The world does seem a little disjointed, and the story feels like it's trying a little too hard to be like the original Dark Souls, but they improve a lot of mechanics from its predecessor.

  • Fan Service: The Game. I mean that in a good way! The only Dynasty Warriors game I played was 4, but I had fond memories of it, so when this game was announced, I knew I'd be buying it. You can tell the creators really like the Zelda franchise, and wanted to make a game fans would love. In my opinion, they succeeded in spades. Tearing through swaths of enemies feels satisfying, and the combos are not terribly complicated, unlike...

  • Bayonetta! She's back! This game is so over the top, batshit crazy, and it's amazing! I love combining different weapons for different combos, and I love Bayonetta's attitude towards facing the powers of heaven and hell. She's cocky, confident, and has the moves to back it up, providing I can actually do the combos I want. I'm not the best at memorizing that sort of thing. Also, the different costumes actually changing up the gameplay a little is a pleasant surprise!

  • Why, oh why, is Destiny on this list! I love it! I hate it! The setup, the premise, and the mission design is so paper thin, but I just can't stop playing! Why do I keep coming back? Because the combat, the act of actually shooting things, is so damn good! It feels right. That's probably the reason why I don't mind the grindy nature of the strike missions and bounties. If only this game had more, if only it was everything that Bungie had promised, it could have been my #1 pick...

  • It's like I've been transported back in time, and the greatest NES game was just released. The music is catchy and still gets stuck in my head to this day. Controls are responsive, levels and enemies are challenging but fun. My only gripe is that this game isn't longer!

  • Speaking of short games, it feels like this game never really got a chance to pick up steam and grip me like other games on the list. I love finding collectables in games, but it just seemed really shallow this time around. Using the varied powers to get around and take out enemies felt good, though. It's just a super short game.

  • It's 2014's... 2001... game of the year? Anywho, FFX is my favourite Final Fantasy game, despite the fact that I never finished it way back when. This time, I did, and it looked amazing. FFX-2 is always labeled as that J-pop Final Fantasy game, and that's true for part of the game. Beyond that, there is a story that explores the world of Spira in the wake of Sin's defeat, and how people handle that. It's got some of the best music in any Final Fantasy game, and the combat is fast-paced, if not a little easy.
