The Digital Pre-Order Cake

No Caption Provided

Suh-WEET!

So as next-gen console release dates get closer, I had a realization, and have made a change. I was listening to a podcast, remembered that all games are supposed to be available digitally Day One of Console Release. And he reminded the listeners that all digital purchases are tax-free. And so I've canceled all my Amazon pre-order games.

So, I live in Texas. And we have 8.25% sales tax. So a retail game can come out to $64.86. Multiply that by some three or four games near launch, and that's a solid $15 or $20 dollars I could keep in my pocket. Hopefully they have the option where you can pre-load your game a couple of days before the game launch. Battlefield 4 is supposed to be 30 gigs to begin with. So in a year or two, those five extra dollars I'm paying for tax, can pay for some solid smaller download titles. And I could stop having to care about going to the Best Buy and caring about waiting in line or whatever.

And well, yea. The hard drive is only like 500 Gigs. And 30 gig games could add up, mathematically to where you could have maybe 16.67 games or so. But I have an external terabyte hard drive just in case it gets filled up. I have to reformat it again, but that's whatever. So I'll just plug that in and I'll be good to go.

Anyway, I just wanted to throw that out there. I'm going all digital from Day One. Are you?

So I realized again. So, 16.67 games can fit on a 500 gig HDD, and 33.33 games can fit on my terabyte hard drive. And I just looked and external hard drive prices have dropped significantly, so that a 2 TB HDD is $90, 3TB is $110, and the 1 TB is $70, depending on the make and blah blah. So the point is that I can have like 2 or 3 ezternal HDDs in my console life cycle, plus the internal, and take it with me to the next-next gen, etc. Cloud Storage should help a bit here too. Like dammit, I really wanna bring all my mixtapes I have on SkyDrive. Just stream that stuff to NFS, or something.

Again, I'm looking forward to thinking about going all digital this time around. Like say also digital movies, HD on my hard drive where I can just pin stuff to my home screen. Like that NFS movie trailer I saw earlier. Although, if prices stay like at $30 a movie, or something, then that might not be so great.

I also read how they're making XONE so you can pin TV shows to your home screen, regardless of your cable provider.

We'll see how this stuff turns out anyway. But dammit I'm excited for all-digital. Fuck yea.

I'm fine with digital for PC's but man, I like my discs on consoles. Cracking open GTA V and putting the disc in was a refreshing experience after so much waiting for PC games to download and install. I don't know, it's the same argument about holding a brand new book in your hand versus impulse buying one on your Kindle while taking a dump.

I like the idea of going all digital. But I just wont be able to bring myself to do it. I usually sell my games when I am done with them on the cheap, or trade them for another game. I wont be able to do that going digital.

@believer258 Well, I mean its good to remember that pre-loading on these next gen seems to be on the checklist, even it comes like a couple months later. If you think of it, these new mobile apps are confirmed so that you can buy all out $60 games on the go, through the app. The console turns on when your away, downloads, and turns off for you hours before you get home.

And yea, I'm on Kindle and I haven't bothered to look back.

@misogynist_the_klown Well, the rumor seems to be that XONE is supposed have a digital resale marketplace. So, well whatever MS does, Sony will just copy and do better. So I'm sure PS will get something similar to this. And friend sharing seems to be in the cards as well.

Then I guess it's digital for you?

I like having something in my hand. Again, digital is fine and even expected for PC games but with console games, I like to have a physical collection. Same with books - I'd like to have a whole shelf that I can sit back and look at. Call me materialistic if you wish, or maybe impractical or old-fashioned, but that's the way I like it.

Though, admittedly, I don't have a large collection of books and my 360 games collection has dwindled from the monstrosity that it once was due to me having most of those games on PC now.

I'll probably have a mix. Games I care about I'll get physically and most other releases I'll go digital.
