Game of The Year 2014 Users Choice

I played absolutely zero major consoles (or PC) releases this year. Not necessarily by choice, but that's the way the chips fell. I also successfully defended a dissertation, so I "beat" my Ph.D.

Most of favorite games were from previous years:

Games not in the Wiki that deserve a spot on this list:

Also notable was a game I played at IndieCade by John Mawhorter in which I traveled into the woods and played a turn-based strategy game with an axe. By far the weirdest experience of the year.

List items

  • I have a love/hate affair with this one. I put more time into it than any other game on the list, yet I recognize some of its glaring flaws (particularly with regard to repetition). But that said, it

  • Mini Metro was to the summer what Threes was to the late winter: a compulsion. I was fortunate enough to judge this game for a festival, which gave me early access to a relatively complete build. I can't wait for this to leave Early Access and see what the finalized game looks like.

  • Biggest surprise of the year. It scratched a comedy itch I didn't know I had in a way I didn't expect possible.

  • I'm only into the second dungeon but already can tell I'm going to stick this one out. I've never played an Etrian Odyssey game, so wrapping that system in a familiar skin has allowed me to experience a type of game I would normally be weary of. The story of why these two Persona casts have ended up together is intriguing and, despite some of the reductive portrayals of the characters, I like the tongue-in-cheek nature of the writing; I got a good chuckle out of the Persona 3 MC saying that going to the movies has made him more charismatic.

  • Countless hours were lost to Threes. Like most people, I eventually hit a wall in score that caused me to retire the game. But even still I possess a dear fondness for this game.

  • This goes to the FFX and X-2 HD collection that was released on PS3/Vita.

  • More Borderlands? Good. Low gravity? Pretty good. Moon zoomies? Great. But more Borderlands isn't enough at this point to keep one of my favorite series at the top of the list.

  • Put on Nidhogg, hand someone a controller, and dare them not to have a good time with it. Not only does it immediately draw out the competitive spirit, it's a great spectator's game too.

  • I'm so far behind on Giant Bomb videos that I didn't know what this was until visiting a friend during the holidays and being mesmerized. Not only is the smartphone controller system ingenious, but it's available on the FireTV! The animation is a little slow but it's great to have it in a portable format. Fibbage ranks #1 in the pack.
