Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, says that the Epic Games store "definitely won't" restrict the sales of games that feature NFTs. Sweeney's comments follow an announcement from Minecraft developer Mojang that outlined its stance not to permit blockchain technologies or NFTs to be used in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's announcement, one fan reached out to Sweeney on Twitter to enquire whether Epic Games would take a similar stance, however Sweeney responded in the negative.
"Developers are free to decide how to build their games, and you're free to decide whether you want to play them," he says. "I believe that operating system and store manufacturers shouldn't try to dictate their views to others. We definitely won't."
Another user responded to Sweeney's post, asking how this differs from the Epic Games policy prohibiting discriminatory and hateful content. Sweeney stated that this is due to "editorial and branding judgements" and that Epic has decided to "draw the line at mainstream acceptable norms."
A few users of the PC gaming subreddit have criticized Sweeney’s stance. This is despite the fact that Epic CEO John McDonnell has been vocal against NFTs in the past. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a copy of an email response in a Twitter reply that reads "We don't want to touch NFTs because the entire field is tangled up with an intractable combination of scams, fascinating foundations of decentralised technology, as well as frauds."
Now Sweeney is open about his belief that developers who use the Epic Game store should have the option of pursuing these integrations if they want however. He said in his tweet in response that "Crypto is complicated.
