Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft took second place in an official list by Google of the top YouTube searches of 2014, placing it immediately behind the word "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google the word "Minecraft" was the most frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than "movies." Gaming celebrity PewDiePie also ranked among YouTube's top searches in 2014, just behind queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for musicians Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that users are more likely to search for gaming-related content and are engaging with them more frequently, even though many of those surveyed don't identify themselves as gamers. YouTube videos in the "Gaming" category topped the service's Top 10 most popular list on 25 different days in October 2014.
According to the report, the report states that a Google Consumer Survey was conducted in October 2014 with people who claimed to have watched gaming videos on YouTube. It found that only 37% of respondents thought themselves gamers. "When asked about their reasons for watching gaming videos, gamers were able to mention 'entertainment' and "humor' as often as they talked about learning new strategies or 'game tips.'"

The report continues: "We also wanted to learn why people are drawn to videos from creators like PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Many of them replied, "Because they are hilarious!" Some even compared these videos to stand-up comedy. A new gaming creator summed up interest with the following analogy: 'You don't have to play soccer to watch it on TV.'"
