My Game of the Year 2021

As always honorable mentions, DOTA 2, they didn't add any thing super interesting this year just solid DOTA overall. COD: Warzone probably my actual game of the year but I had it last year still paying it and liking the new map a lot. The ones on this list that aren't very descriptive I played at the beginning on the year and don't remember too too much about. Enjoy.

31.Ni no Kun: Wrath of the White Witch

I really wanted to like Ni No Kuni and I did for about 20 hours. I put up with the early game grinding once the game opened up. I got to the Pig City tried the boss and said I am done. Majority of the reason is the grind and also that the AI teammates are completely useless and you are just doing all the work. I would have more tolerance for the grinding if I didn’t do so much leading up to that point. The reason why its on this list is because of the amount of hours I sank into it.

30. Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2

I fee like this game does have some aspects better than the first, I think the combat is slightly more fast paced and fun in this game, but ultimately the game is just below average and the stealth parts aren’t fun or engaging.

29. Band Hero DS

I really only bought this because I lost my guitar grip for On Tour, that said, its still a fun game, however the song selection isn’t great in terms of the songs themselves and the tabs are just way too hard for playing on the DS with the guitar.

28. Halo ODST

I don’t remember much of this game, just an average shooter.

27. Halo Reach

Also don’t remember much of this lol I like how they started to finally change the Halo formula this by adding the different abilities even if i just kept the sprint the whole time

26. Halo 4

Halo 4 is my favorite and the last Halo campaigned I played. The series finally adds a new much needed arsenal of weapons and keeps the sprint and other items from Reach.

25. Rise of the Tomb Raider

Not much to say about this, I enjoyed my time but I think the first one was better.

24. Red Dead Redemption

Let me first say that I did play this game back in the day and play maybe 8-10 hours doing both stories and side activities then my save got deleted. I tried to go back and play again a few years later, but the beginning of the game is still a slog to get through and I stopped playing. This year I said I am going to push myself to finish the game. I did not do any side missions or activities I just stuck with the story missions. I will say this, that is not the way to play this game.

Playing just the story mission goes like this. Ride to the mission and start it. Now the mission tells you to ride across the map to the location of the objective. DO the objective complete mission. Now travel back across the map to get the next mission from them and then do it again and again and again. The mission struck in this game in terms of travel is god awful. You ride on your horse too often to a location to even just start shooting people or race or whatever, only for the mission to end on the other side of map. The story I found was pretty lack luster and riding the horses and mechanic to not whip the horse too much is out dated and seems completely useless. That I said i think if i did do some side missions and hunt, etc. would have made this a more enjoyable experience and when i first got the game i did that and enjoyed it until the save disappeared. I think people who love the game should play it again to find the baffling flaws that it has.

23. Castlevania Lords of Shadow

I liked this one better than the second game, pretty fun third person action game, though I did not care for any of the end game puzzles.

22.X-Men Legends

I played this alone so it was very repetitive. I think with 3 other people would be a lot more fun.

21. Danganronpa 2

I really enjoyed the story and twist and turns with this. I did cheat and look up the answers to the trials because those in themselves take a long time to do and personally I did not like them in the first game and made this more enjoyable.

20. Zelda 2 Adventure of Link

This game is very very underrated Zelda game. This game is awesome. Its difficult yes, but every time I died in the dungeon i made it further every time. Grinding was an issue, but its not that bad. The music is great and overall people should give this another shot.

19. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond

Pokemon Diamond might be my favorite in the serious and that is this game. The underground area is the best part by seeing the Pokemon walk around. This game however is still very easy and mindless. You just spam the A button and wait for battles to finish.

18. Axiom Verge

Really fun game enjoyed it a lot. I think some of the music is too much as well as there is just too much red in the game that felt like it was hurting my eyes

17. Ittle Dew

Finally got around to playing this one highly recommend it if you are looking for a short puzzle game that doesn’t overstay its welcome and has one of the most clever boss fights in a video game.

16. Resident Evil DS

First time playing Resident Evil and man what a great game that surprised me. Loved the puzzles the combat once you get used to it, its totally fine. There are touch green mini games in this that it can do without, but there is a mode where it does have that.

15. Halo Infinite (Multiplayer)

First time I actually played a Halo game where the multiplayer is new, and wow a lot a fun and solid shooting. Sorry, I don’t know its also pretty generic first person shooting.

14. Stardew Valley

A game that I do need to go back to and play but I did have a good time with it, I do have to be in the mood to play one of these. ( I know these are very descriptive this year)

13. Crash Bandicoot Trilogy

I originally have and play Crash 2 and 3 when I was a kid but never played crash 1. This overall is a great package of games, now lets break it down. The games do get better with each sequel. Better level design, better controls and abilities. Crash 1 is a basic platformer that feels its only hard because of the camera. Crash 2 is my favorite solid level design the control is better but its just not tight enough as Crash 3. Crash 3 has the best control the new abilities keeps it fresh, but any of the non platforming levels aren’t great and are only there to add “variety” that it doesn’t need.

12. Ittle Dew 2

This game is fantastic and highly recommended. Takes the ideas from the first game and fleshes it out completely. Great puzzles, another clever boss fight, and the music absolutely kicks ass. Just about every song is catchy and memorable. I am talking about you, Star Woods.

11. Dicey Dungeons

Another game that I would like to go back and play more/finish. Great concept, really fun and clever, though having luck as the main mechanic isn’t always that fun.

10. Pokemon Unite

As someone who enjoys MOBAs I really have a good time with this and will still pop in from time to time. Does it have issues like the pay to win stuff, yes, but you can look past it if you play casually and I do find as the abilities are happen it can be really hard to see what is going on.

9. AVGN 1 & 2 Deluxe

I have been a huge fan of the show, picked up the first one on steam years ago however no controller support so I never played much. That said I think 2 is better than 1. This has great platforming, its tough but fair, and while yes there are a lot of AVGN references, I would recommend to anyone who likes a challenging 2-D side scroller its made really well.

8. Donkey Kong Country

I played this one at a friends house while we drank and took turns, but this time I finally beat it on my own (yes still having beers) but you all know it is a terrific platformer with great music.

7. Astros Playroom

First time playing a PS5 and that controller blew me away. I thought it was super cool and the game itself is fun, I could only beat it, due to it was at my brothers house and would enjoy collecting everything once I get a PS5 down the road.

6. Castlevania Advanced Collection

What a collection of games. They are all very similar, but with slightly different mechanics in each. I think the games do progressively get better and I have to grind a lot in Circle of the Moon. I hope they make the DS collection since though games are now stupidly expensive for no reason. I didn’t play much of Dracula X but I do intend on trying to beat it one day.

5. Super Metroid

I thought the internet was going to be wrong with Super Metroid as they are with most nostalgic Nintendo games, but they were absolutely correct on this. Fantastic class game. The only downside is that this game is pretty playable to figure out not too cryptic but there was on place I did have to look up to continue that I wish it did a better job presenting.

4. Skyward Sword HD

This game has the best combat in any Zelda..Hear me out. Every Zelda game is either a top down and press A or side step awkwardly and swing the sword. While yes most enemies in this game you can just wiggle the sword back and forth, and yes it doesn’t always work like its supposed to and can get frustrating, but when the sword is working like you want to work its works incredible well and you do feel like like swinging the sword and dueling the enemies. The fact that this game was on the Wii and also has BOTW elements blows my mind. This game has great dungeons, fun exploration, and fantastic music. Please do not listen to the people who have this game on the bottom of the Zelda list since its probably closer to the top of mine and above Ocarina, try it out and see for yourself.

3. Control

This game is super and has one of the coolest moments in a video that I have not experienced in a long time. Super fun to play, super cool story and universe. I will say I wish the game wasn't so grey and also wish it ran better on PS4.

2. Bioshock Infinite/Burial at Sea HD

I wasn’t sure if I was going to put this on the list due to I played and beat both when they came out. My ultimate decision with putting it on is that its my first time replaying the game since I first played it back in 2013. I also replay the original Bioshock every couple of years, but never chose this because while I did like it, I didn’t hit me like the first one ( i wrote a review on this website about the game). Replaying that completely changed that opinion. The I forgot most of the story and even some of the twist which made it all super enjoyable and exciting again. Columbia is also an awesome place to explore much like Rapture. I also even enjoyed the combat more the second time around and while I didn’t use the sky rail too much, I did have more fun with it overall. I remember when the game came out people who liked it all of a sudden quickly turned on it and I think now enough time has passed for those people to replay it if they haven’t already. Burial at Sea is also super cool, going back to Rapture and even seeing it live and well even for a little bit is something I always wanted. The DLC wraps it all up in a short package and add unique mechanics that separate the 2 parts and makes them their own. This game did change my original mind on the game which I rated it 4 starts but I would but this at a 5 out of 5 now.

1.Immortals Fynx Rising

This game is extremely underrated and deserved better. I remember every person was shitting on the voice cast and script and while yes it isn’t very good its not the worst. Plus I played as the female character whos voice acting is way better than the male. But that is all everyone could talk about was the glaring negative and comparing it to BOTW to which I would think is very unfair because it does stand out on its own due to the combat being way more fun and engaging than in BOTW. The “shires” in this game I also found way more satisfying and interesting than the ones in BOTW and you didn’t mind about the combat shrines in this because the combat is so fun. I enjoyed the side activities and puzzles as well. While yes, I wish there was a little more to find when exploring I think if they get a second crack at this game it would be really good. This is the one game that i constantly still think about and will occasionally picked up and play do a few of the side stuff and put back down and I do intend to try and do everything in this game at some point ( I did get this on Switch and perfect for that). This game is also really cheap now, so pick it up when you can, but everything that everyone said negatively about it behind and enjoy the game for what it is and make up your own opinions on it.
