Loved this game front to back. Yeah, a lot of the moons are trivial, but to me that was a way for players who did not want to engage with the difficult platforming challenges to still progress through the game and even unlock the post game content. What made the game for me was how well Mario controlled, though. I haven't played any other game where the act of moving across the world is so much fun. Chaining together crazy quadruple jumps and amassing real speed is what made even the stupidly easy moons enjoyable for me. Top that with the impressive and varied art style (I can't believe someone characterized the art as if it was pulled from random free Unity assets) and global leaderboards for races and I've put in like 70 hours into the game

Hey all, I know this is a very broad question, but I figured maybe I could find what I'm looking for here.

I have zero experience with the Monster Hunter series whatsoever apart from reading some articles and maybe seeing some quick looks. However, the concept of a longer term, single\multiplayer rpg for PS4 really appeals to me right now. The series is notorious for being difficult too get into and obtuse, so I guess I'm wondering if this game is actually what I'm looking for? The stuff I'm reading online mostly talks about how it is different from other games in the series, but as an outsider I'm still not really sure what the game is. Any opinions from those in the beta or those with experience with the series that could maybe point to how this game is for newcomers\what to expect?

Thanks! And sorry again for how general the question is!

All Uncle Amiibo does is circumvent you spending coins on hints in a game where coins are really a non-issue. ESPECIALLY by the time you're needing to buy hints to find the last moons, you're rolling in coins. I have amiibo but ultimately didn't use them for hints because the 'wait 5 minutes' restriction on amiibo hints just wasn't worth saving coins over. The only thing about the amiibo stuff that does bother me is that with the Odyssey Bowser amiibo you can locate remaining purple coins in each kingdom, something that there is no way to do without amiibo. That really irritates me because it is an additional tool that a) is not available in the game any other way and b) is actually very useful (the extra hearts or whatever you get from other amiibo don't really matter).

Very interesting read! You've put together a really thorough criticism. I haven't tried the game but have been interested in it for awhile. Seems maybe like something I'll just level through and stop...?

In the beginning of your post you talk a lot about the 'never been a better time to be playing games' phrase, and how it may not apply to all gamers as certain genres or features have disappeared over time in games. Just wanna point out that I don't really think the phrase is supposed to state that all genres are growing, everything is thriving and every niche is being satisfied. Instead, at least in the context it is used on this website, it is a phrase used to keep discourse positive. Yeah, those negative trends are a bummer, but there's also a ton of cool stuff going on in games. Visually games are continuing to improve, the indie space has exploded in the last decade, and quite a few big publishers have started new IP or seriously experimented on long running franchises. True, RTS has basically disappeared and microtransactions are growing, but in many other spaces games are getting better and better.

@jamjyo I absolutely agree with you, and that's also a very well made video! Good work!

I do think, though, that 'hivemind' views are not quite as pervasive or dominating as you imply in the video. Sure, within certain communities certain opinions become widespread, but I think that is a result of a) like minded individuals congregating in the same places and b) long exposure to other viewpoints eventually convinces some of those that disagree. It is rare, I feel, that any 'hivemind' position is both present no matter what forum or community you are in and is simultaneously harmful or untrue. For example, in your video, you mention a common dislike among gamers for both free to play games and for the call of duty games. However, there are multiple very popular games that are free to play that seem to sit well with gaming culture (i.e. Hearthstone, LoL, Dota 2). At the same time, there are many communities where Call of Duty is not widely unpopular or looked down upon. Perhaps this is because certain prominent figures or administrators in the community feel that way (you could make this argument for Jeff and Giantbomb, for example), but I don't think that's always true.

I guess I'm just saying that I don't think it is AS big of a problem as you are making it out to be, because those large opinions are usually contained within a given community. Still, though, I absolutely agree that none of it should affect what you have fun with and what you should play. It's awesome that you found something that you really liked that you'd previously avoided!

Again, very well made video. I see that that's your first video on your channel, but if you decide to make anymore I'll definitely watch them. Well edited, cool graphics, varied and appropriate background feed, and very professionally written. I'm subscribed!

Started with the pro controller, worked fine, although I think the idea of jolting the controller left or right is sort of weird when you're holding it with both hands. Switched to split joycons with grips, gotta say I'm actually really liking it. I'm like 5 hours in and the motion controls have not misread an input ONCE. Actually not bothering me at all. I think the hat motion stuff is good, in particular being able to redirect it in various ways after an initial throw, my only real complaint is that some of the captures require motion that doesn't click with me (that stretchy guy in the steam gardens). Recommend giving split joycons a go!

If you're looking for a fun rpg fps for about 30 hours, I think it's perfect. If you really like the shooting like I do, you keep going, but I think for the vast majority of players the "living, breathing" element isn't that important. Maybe it won't keep you past the first month, but it's still a lot of content for $60.
