All PS1 Games in Order: Part 000

I've never owned or touched the original Playstation. I was fairly young during its time and I was in a Nintendo household, so I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64 but I didn't even know Playstations existed until well into the PS2 era. I've dabbled a bit over the years but the whole PS1 catalog is a huge blind spot for me. So, in a feverish fit of bad ideas, I've decided to do a blog series where I play every PS1 game in release order. Because this is an unreasonably massive goal, there have to be a few caveats:

  • I'm only playing games with North American releases, because the US is the only country in the world
  • It'll be at a pace of about two per week at the start three or four games per week, though this can be adjusted
  • When there's more than one game released on the same day, I'll play them in alphabetical order
  • If I can't find a way to play a certain game, I will conclude that it doesn't exist and it's getting skipped
  • Because it would take tens of thousands of hours to play each game to completion, I've decided that I will play each game until it pisses me off or gets boring, and I'll try to get at least an hour with each game but I won't make promises

That last point is the most important since these games are 20-something years old and the design for a lot of these are going to feel archaic. I'm not super good at games, and with no childhood muscle memory to rely on I expect to be rubbed the wrong way by a lot of these things. It'll be interesting to see as I go along if I adjust my playstyle to better match the standards of the time and/or my jank tolerance increases.

With all of that said, I'll be starting with the games available on release day, September 9, 1995, and the first of those are Air Combat and Battle Arena Toshinden. What could go wrong?
