@gtxforza: Yeah, Top Gun is probably the third best Flight Combat game so far with the first two being Air Combat and Wing Arms. Though, every game beneath Top Gun in that ranking is actively bad, so it's more of a 'first loser' position.

I had not heard of Aero Fighter Assault, though my knowledge of non-Nintendo N64 games is mostly limited to Mento's blog series. I'll probably end up playing it in like three years.

Played it when it came out. At least for me, the joke doesn't overstay its welcome and the whole thing was a light and breezy experience. It plays like a completely adequate Boomer Shooter and I chuckled once or twice.

@gtxforza: @judaspete:

It's such an off-putting cover, I'm surprised anyone bought any copies of the thing. I even saw the Saturn version in the wild recently, and it creates a visceral aversion to even touching the box. This gets more egregious when you consider that the original cover was supposed to be something similar to this:

You know, a cute cartoony game for kids.

@stealydan:

Again, Taito couldn't help but take L's anytime they did anything outside Japan.

Also, Air Combat is likely to stay at the top of the rankings until the beginning of next year at the earliest.

@lab392:

FUCK! that's a better reference than mine...

@jeffrud: Yeah, wasn't Namco super focused on early polygonal games at this point?

@manburger: Thank you and everyone else for the continued readership!

@jeffrud: The PS1 and Saturn weren't really things when this batch of nonsense was being inflicted on the world. Plus, there's way weirder trash that don't have release dates. If we're looking at how this is crazy, crap like those two games would have been the only examples of next gen gaming during '94, which had to have been a mindfuck. I personally would have been pessimistic about the future of video games had I been around at the time.

Also, the 3DO was like 80% of the way through its lifecycle by the time the PS1 hit U.S. shelves. The hype cycle for that machine would have begun at the end of '94 with rumors coming out of Japan, and the real marketing bltiz wouldn't start until May '95. If anything, the mere idea of the Playstation is what killed the 3DO. if you want any direct software comparison, the Saturn would have come out around the same time as Gex and the PS1 would have gone up against the sequel to Iron Angel of the Apocalypse.

@judaspete: @manburger: Glad to be back. I wrote the Soccer Kid portion several weeks ago, and, well, you'll see.

@gtxforza: That back and forth in the 90's brought out the best of both Namco and Sega. I haven't looked into Dirt Dash, as I didn't want to extend the timeline out too much, but its existence doesn't surprise me at all. I might revisit this topic again in several years when I get to the late 90's.

Between New New Super Mario Bros., New Super Sonic Bros., and a new Super Princess Peach game it seems like there are as many polygonal 2D platformers in the works as there are farming sims. At this point Metroid Prime 4 is going to be launch title for their new hardware.

Maybe they'll finally make Mario RPG into something playable.
