Did Austin miss the part where Google pledged to resist legally unsupported DMCA takedowns as part of its normal processes..? They are specifically backing these six examples right now, but where did Austin get the impression that Google is just going to shrug their shoulders if nothing happens with those examples, and when new, similar cases pop up down the line? This is clearly a shift in policy on Google's part, and that message is going out to rights holders. Or have I misinterpreted it? It's not an out and out victory for fair use, but why so pessimistic @austin_walker?
Here is the actual quote from Google's blog post, which, by the way, is called "A Step Toward Protecting Fair Use on YouTube":
"While we can’t offer legal protection to every video creator—or even every video that has a strong fair use defense—we’ll continue to resist legally unsupported DMCA takedowns as part of our normal processes. We believe even the small number of videos we are able to protect will make a positive impact on the entire YouTube ecosystem, ensuring YouTube remains a place where creativity and expression can be rewarded."
Lame response by the organizers. I say let the relevant authorities investigate these asshole trolls and go ahead with the event. There's security there anywhere, no?
