@vagrant_gamer: Fred, Kelly, and Linda were introduced in (and survived) the book, Fall of Reach. Nobody who had only played the games would know that, though, which is why it's bizarre to me that zero explanation is given to get people up to speed. Halo 4 had the same problem, expecting everyone to have already absorbed all of the extra-game story beats.
