In this video I talk about Chunsoft’s Sound Novel franchise, a hugely important series in the history of Japanese video games that served as the progenitor to the visual novel genre and a source of inspiration for all kinds of creators.
This is a video I’ve been meaning to make since I started this channel. In fact, it was the release of 428: Shibuya Scramble back in 2018 that motivated me to begin researching the history of visual novels and eventually start making YouTube videos. However, it wasn’t until the end of 2023 that I really started to put pen to paper and finally make this project a reality. However, 2023 was also the year I started a new full-time job that took up a lot of my free time. Plus, I was also knee deep working as an editor on the Sakura Wars 2 fan translation at the time. Because of all that, the sound novel video ended up taking a lot longer to make than I initially anticipated and it ended up being a much longer video than I anticipated as well. But now it’s finally complete! I hope everyone enjoys learning about an often overlooked part of Japanese game history.
