Okay, this has bugged me for a couple years and I've never figured out the answer. Is there a significance to the color of a person's username? If I remember right, Ryan mentioned on the last podcast the color of a user's name. I gave up an assumed its random, am I right?
@Bratcher_Lev: @BlinkyTM: @AndyD74: This happened to me and I made a thread about it a week ago. Chances are good that you have a quest ongoing with the companions. One of the quests involves following a companion member to a dungeon (the early mission where you find out the companions secret). If you have a follower at the time of accepting the mission the member of the companions, just walks to the dungeon anyway, with or without you. If at some point after accepting this mission your follower leaves you (in this case its Uthgard the Unbroken) that companion member is automatically you, and the game does not tell you what happened.
Bingo. This was it. Holy hell that was annoying. After I finished the quest I picked Uthgard up again, took the stuff from her pockets and dropped it off at Breezehome, and then managed to get Uthgard murdered in the very next skirmish. Easy come, easy go, I suppose.
Okay so... I had Uthgerd the Unbroken as my follower, then decided to knock out the next thing for the main quest. I talked to the Whiterun Jarl, and was given a follower as a part of the quest. When they joined, Uthgerd walked away. No biggie, I thought, I'll catch up with her later. I finish the quest, I get Lydia as a housecarl, and all is good. Except for when I go to pick Uthgerd back up. She says I'm already with someone. Uh, no I'm not. Nobody's following me. I talk to Lydia, try to get her to join up, same thing. Says she can't, party's already too crowded. So Uthgerd is sitting in the inn in Whiterun with a ton of my crap in her pockets and I can't get her, or anybody to follow me.
This kinda thing happened in New Vegas. A patch came out that spawned a few "Dismiss Followers" terminals, which was convenient. I don't really rely on companions, so it's only an inconvenience, but is anyone else experiencing this? I mean, it's no backwards flying dragons or anything, but still. Frustrating.
