Favorite Games of the Generation

  • Dark Souls is probably one of my favorite games of all time, let alone this generation. Jumping into the game without ever playing Demon's Soul filled the game with this great sense of discovery, and sheer anger inducing frustration. Playing Dark Souls at the time of its release was one of the most interesting experiences I have ever had with gaming. It was great to see people try and piece together certain aspects of the game and try and figure out how to go about certain encounters. In a time where I rarely revisit games - I have continued to come back to Dark Souls and each time it is just as great as the first time around.

  • Being someone who never played the older games in the Fallout series, Fallout 3 was an incredible game. I distinctly remember the time frame when Fallout 3 launched and having extended conversations with my friends about all of the crazy shit that we had done, or come across while exploring the Wasteland. A lot about this game is unforgettable - from the quest where you steal the Declaration of Independence for a dope ass robot, to randomly stumbling upon your first super mutant behemoth; Fallout 3 is damn good. Not to mention it had some pretty great downloadable content that kept giving me an excuse to come back for more.

  • Regardless of your feelings on the matter - Call of Duty 4 may be the most influential game of this generation. From the campaign to the groundbreaking online multiplayer Call of Duty 4 was fantastic. In fact I'm pretty sure that Call of Duty 4's multiplayer is the game in which I've invested the most time into, aside from maybe World of Warcraft. The leveling system was nearly perfect and induced an almost crack-like addiction, only furthered by the prestige system. I may have jumped ship from the series after this game, but I still revere it as one of my favorite games of all time.

  • Crusader Kings 2 is a bit difficult to recommend to people, as it does set a fairly high barrier of entry, but this game is fucking rad. Plain and simple. The character system has created some of my most memorable experiences in all of gaming. The campaign where my entire dynasty was more or less assassinate in the matter of minutes was incredibly infuriating, but also absolutely hilarious to witness. Setting about personal goals for each playthrough can be incredibly rewarding. Do you want to simply maintain control of your empire for as long as possible, or do you want to play as a vassal and overthrow your ruler from within? Crusader Kings offers some great player options and is possibly my favorite experience with a strategy game of all time.
