Full reviews started to hit online today. I'm actually not surprised to see many 6s on sites like Polygon and Gamespot, and the negativities are mainly focused on repetitive loot grinding in the same area and poor story.
You have to know that reviews are just numbers, reviewers do reviews for their own jobs, not for us gamers. Everyone has their own opinion and I respect that. In the end the day, we play games for our own pleasure not review scores...
Jeff has been comparing Destiny to the 1st PSO and I personally think it's more like Monster Hunter than anything else, and we all know that MH series is generally considered bad games here but extremely well-regarded in Japan, in fact, MH3G and MH4 were GOTY in Japan back in 2012 and 2013.
Let's compare MH to Destiny...
Story:
MH - None
Destiny - Shallow but at least it is a 15-hour campaign
[Their focuses are not stories, but character growth, I'll touch on this later...]
Maps:
MH - A town full of NPCs, and there are set number of sites for players to go through.
DY - A tower full of NPCs, and there are set number of planets for players to go through.
Things to do in those maps:
MH - All the quests in MH are basically kill monsters, but you can harvest crafting items on ur own.
DY - Stories, Strikes, wandering-about quests.
Loot:
I grew up in Japan and came to the US 10 yrs ago, I'm a huge gamer even until today. I understand the differences between Japanese games and western games very clearly. I think grinding-based JRPGs is what we like the most back in Japan, I played almost all the Level 5 games back in the days like Inazuma 11, Monster watch, Ni no pokemon...It's not fair in comparison because they are all story-driven games. Western games nowadays [AAA titles] tends to focus more on stories, even their gameplay is not that great overall, Walking dead and TLOU were the GOTY in 2012 and 13 for example. I think reviewers were reviewing Destiny from a expected perspective which is Bungie as a western studio should make a game that is more cater to the western audience, however, I think Destiny is more cater to me and my fellow Jgamers. I think Destiny is the kind of game that like MH, but enjoyable to play. There is only one way to get loot and rare crafting items in MH, that is repeat the same quests over and over and over again. I spent almost 900 hrs in MH4 and 500 hrs in 3G doing that. The character progression is also similar. The real Destiny starts after Lv20, you equip different gears in tandem with different skills to build a unique guardian as you like. In MH, you can do the same but even crazier. On top of sets and their active and passive skills, u can also equip gems into slots on different gears that will activate other skills if the number reaches certain threshold...that's why high-level players don't wear sets so that they can activate skills on the fly with different gears.
P.S. 3G and 4 are both exclusive to 3ds, they are not even on the vita. It is crazy in this NEX-GEN 1080P era that these kind of games [Mechanics > Graphics and stories] sell the most in Japan.
I'm surprised that I like Destiny more than any games released so far on the current-gen system and that makes me thinking the similarities between this and grinding-based JRPGs.
I would give the game at least 8.5/10 personally...
