It's Been a While Since I've Grinded

Yevon behold!
Yevon behold!
So, the Monday night I devoted to FFX was great! Not so much in enjoying the game's story; because I barely got anywhere with that, but instead having a blast by actively utilizing one of the redeeming (or demeaning based on perception) aspects of RPGs, level grinding. If you played FFX before, you know that they revitalized the system in which the characters level up and progress their abilities and attributes. It's done by the use of the sphere grid. I won't go into full detail of how that works, but let's just say I fully understand how it works now. When I got FFX back at its launch, I was only ten years of age, so playing it (and I got really far) sometimes I got confused with certain gameplay elements.

This ties into my "grinding" activity the other night, which in my case I never grind in an RPG that early on. But this night I spent about a solid hour doing so, and it was quite fun. My plan is to bring each character up 10 sphere levels or higher for every vast battle area I walkthrough. And for this first time it paid of really well, as I was able to make good progress in upgrading Tidus and the gang. With that said, I'm loving FFX even more than I was back in 2002. And I'm only about 5 and a half hours in. I plan on playing more tonight. Right now I'm at the second Cloister of Trials, which has some type of fire theme going on in the temple, so this is where Yuna will recieve Ifrit! I love Ifrit, and no, that was not a story spoiler OKAY?! :P

Peace. :)

Good luck with that and yes, playing games as a child can be confusing at times but now it seems you've fully understood the way Final Fantasy X works.

Ah, level grinding... the reason I will probably never finish FFIII for the DS (also, I just looked up "sphere grid" in Google images and holy crap that looks confusing).

I really enjoyed FFX when it first came out. I think it is one the best RPGs I have ever played due to its pacing and story, not to mention the musical score and leveling system. I played FFX for a week straight after getting home from work and finalized the game that weekend. It was very satisfying.

I can easily say I am going to play it again in the future as it has some secrets that I have yet to unfold and discover.

Yeah what Gearhead and pill said.

I've found myself doing this in FFIV for the DS just because some of the dungeons are tough and you need to be stronger.

This traces all the way back (for me) to the first pokemon games. I'd bulk my guys up early so it wouldn't be as hard :P

I don't remember having to grind too much in FFX. Not nearly as bad as FFXII's grind-fest. But I do remember really hating the Cloister trials. They were just so long and tedious.

Yeah, I can't blame you for not playing CoD4 all the time. I'm trying to fight it off now too :P

I must really get back to play FFX and actually finish it because that is one thing I hate doing and that is getting far into a game then abandoning it and have done that on more than one occasion.  Maybe when I am done with some of these backlog games I plan on beating that I will go back to FFX.

FFX is such a great game.  One of the only RPGs I could endure along with KotOR & Mass Effect.

Argh, I remember when I used to be obsessed with that game around the launch, around the same time you played it so much. The problem was, I got to one of the bosses close to the end of the game (Spectral Keeper), but he kept using these cheap beserk attacks, and I didn't have any beserk-ward armor or anything, so now matter how hard I tried, I couldn't beat him. I'll probably start a new game again someday when I have nothing else to play though.

I generally only stick to grinding when I deem it is required.  Like if a new ability is close to being obtained, or some of my characters are significantly lacking in certain skill departments.  Good to know you are having a great time with it though, FFX is an amazing game.

this kinda relates more to the last blog you wrote, but i wasnt sure if you check the comments of older posts, but you mentioned you liked video game music. You should check out ocremix.org , its got a lot of goods remixs of video games, especially on stuff like the old sonic games
