Top 10 GOTY 2016

List items

  • DOOM is a special game. It almost perfectly captures the feeling of the first 2 games, the speed, the violence the design, but cleverly updates it for modern gamers. The addition of the glory kill system brings with it a desire to always be moving. The campaign story is very tongue in cheek, with a wink & nod to the player on regular occasions.

Plus it looks and sounds amazing.

  • I'm not really a multiplayer guy. Mostly because I'm realy bad at it. But Overwatch always makes you feel special, like you're helping the team, no matter which of the wonderfully designed characters you're playing, with abilities that link and complement each other. The decision to hide your kill/death ration and highlight players for things other than kills (time on objectives, support player, heals, armor up-time) is genius.

It's been responsible for some of my favourite moments of gaming in 2016 and I expect to play many more.

  • I loved the first game, 2 takes everything I loved about it and ramps it up a notch. The addition of Emily, with a very different set of powers to Corvo made me want play through the game twice.

The thing that really makes it special though is the environmental story telling, the level design, in particular the moving (literally) world of the Clockwork Mansion & the time jumping Aramis Stilton Mansion.

  • Makes you feel like a fucking badass.

  • More Xcom, nuff said.

  • I didn't end up sticking with it over the year, but the 20-30 hours I put into it to reach level 20 were well spent.

  • Stunningly beautiful Olly Moss art, infused with perfect music and a story about a man trying to run away from his life and his problems.

  • Beautiful and haunting. If you enjoyed Limbo, this is a must.

  • This game makes it onto the list from the soundtrack alone. Seriously.

Also it's basically a silent movie.
