I used to be a HP guy, until my third Dark Souls 1 playthrough. Straight out of the gate, I got busy accumulating about 15-20k of souls in a half-hour or so and put it all into strength. I smashed through a bunch of bosses, rang the bells, and reached Anor Londo in under three hours; it felt so right.
Nioh didn't work that way for me. I found balancing my stats much more important than other games -- magic, spirit, and skill were all as vital as each other in my opinion, so I couldn't apply my Souls method much at all. I got my strength up to eleven and never touched it again. Dex the same. It depends.
If FF Type-0 and Dissidia had a child, I bet it would come out a bit like this. I think it looks really good, personally, and am watching it download with excitement.
Old XBOX shit is some of the most underrated in the medium. That Buffy game that was great, Otogi was dope, JSRF (the credits should have just said STYLE over and over), DOA 3, Ninja Gaiden, PGR2, and I will be adding this to the list. Very much a repeat of the Dreamcast -- a short run of interesting gems, then death.
@cannonballbam: I hear you, that's a fair and understandable reaction to it. It's not like you think it should be banned as a phrase, ha, but there was a long time that challenging the player without mercy was far from standard, and Souls has made it cool again, so it's never far from the tip of the tongue.
Having said that, the name Dead Cells is -- arguably -- an absolute nod to Dark Souls specifically, so maybe those mechanics are also a nod more than a 'nudge nudge wink wink'.
@cannonballbam: I don't think you'll upset anyone. It's not as egregious as 'metroidvania', I'm sure you'll agree, but it is weird when only one or a couple of features that Souls popularized is enough for people to make a connection, even if it shows up in a thin way that's not 1:1. I see it when it's like The Surge or Salt & Sanctuary, but with this I'm not really seeing it other than you keep some upgrades and retrieve some gold you lost (which is a borderline similarity anyway).
There was an edge of 'talking down' to Abby at one or two tiny moments, maybe, if you need to word it negatively in that type of way, but she is literally brand new to some of those games and the site.
When I meet or describe stuff to new people, my natural instinct is to add a layer of niceness to my base personality and explain or interact in a more animated and positive way. From the outside, that can seem condescending, it really can. Try not to think into it like that.
GB west are more dude-esque, don't give a shit types. They don't need to try with new people, ha. If Abby was over there, no one would try to make it an easy time for her. Different personalities, that's it. Nothing deeper, I'm 100% sure.
Ben sounds like one of those chill dudes who speaks as if they've had a little too much cough medicine, and have unlocked the secrets of the universe with deep introspection.
I bet he's the kind of guy who orders pizza, ends up having a joint with the delivery guy and then convinces them to give up pie-slinging and follow their dreams.
I used to adore this genre. Soul Blade and Tekken 3 were my first 3D ones, and I bought and played the hell out of nearly every fighting game after that, but I fell off when I realized the 360 controller was terrible for SFIV when it came out, and I never got round to getting a fightpad to really try and get to a semi-pro level like I wanted to. I thought Blaz Blue was brilliant and found that easy to play, but this series has rekindled my deep love of it, so I thought, "To hell with this." I just ordered a Hori fight commander, bought Ultra SFIV and SFV, pre-ordered Tekken 7, and added King of Fighters XIII to my Steam wishlist.
Thank you guys! One of my favourite videos on the site in a while.
@sethmode: I'm envious of people who are enjoying ME:A so much, so I'm somewhere in the middle of the furore. I'm a very optimistic person at heart, so I'm often let down by my own expectations as much as I am by less-than-stellar products, but I feel it's a bit of both in this game's case. It's not awful; it's not a gem. Disappointing games hurt me so much more than overtly bad ones. The writing and VA complaints are completely valid and consistently evident to people who look/listen super intently and care deeply about that stuff, but I agree the savage reactions to the bugs are -- funny, sure -- but overblown.
I don't think it's crazy when people say they don't understand someone's criticisms, but I tend to appreciate and empathize with other people's bugbears as much as I do my own, you know? Everyone is different of course. All it takes is a minute of thinking outside of your own bias, which is hard sometimes, but I enjoy doing it, and I enjoy absorbing every type of opinion, positive, negative, and neutral.
