Best of 2009

The best games of this year (that I actually played this year).

List items

  • Here it is. My GOTY '09, Uncharted 2. After playing through both Uncharted 1 and 2 back-to-back, I really saw the step up U2 has taken from its predecessor. It took everything I love about Tomb Raider and added a great story, fantastic shooting mechanics, and fun multiplayer. This is definitely a game I will come back to for years to come and a game any PS3 owner should be proud to have in their collection.

  • CoD4 on steroids. What more can I ask for. I loved every second of this game. I felt like a total badass through the campaign and continued to kick ass into multiplayer. Get a few friends together and rain terror on everyone you play against in team deathmatch. The sequel to one of my favorite games of all time, it blew all my expectations out of the water.

  • Bad translation? Check.

    Bland art style? Check

    Boring gameplay? Check.

How could this possibly be number three on my list? The story. Looking past the horrific translation, the story was fantastic. I love this kind of game. This visual novel on the DS was the perfect game I needed to scratch that story-intensive itch. One of the most underrated games of this year, Lux-Pain is my personal Handheld game of this year.

  • inFAMOUS. How much I despise the way your title is spelled. But that does not hinder on the fact that you were an awesome game. A game with an interesting story and fun gameplay, this was one of the best games I've played this console generation, and it will be hard to dethrone this as my favorite superhero game.

  • Ah Ratchet & Clank, the wonderful times we had on the PS2. I remember then fondly. And with this, their newest outing, I'm set to have many more. It's a fantastic title that keeps the same R&C humor and gameplay while adding a few cool mechanics like controlling time, this is definitely one of their best games yet. My first R&C game since "Up Your Arsenal," it did not disappoint by any means and is truly one of the best games on the PS3.

    Also, Mr. Zurkon.

  • Hot off the heels of my Persona high, this game had a high expectation to live up to - and it delivered on all fronts. From story to gameplay, I don't expect anything but the best from Atlus, and this game was some of the best I've seen from them. I also love the awesome Raiho doll that came with the game. It's a Jack Frost dressed up as Raidou, AND IT'S JUST THE CUTEST LITTLE THING!!!

  • The first game I've played where I actually feel like Batman. The predator-like stealth aspect to the combat along with the simple one-button fighting mechanic really made me feel like a badass, and, in the end, isn't that what we needed in a Batman game all along? A great game with fantastic gameplay and story, it truly is one of the best superhero games I've played. Now... if they could only make a good Superman game...

  • The Sony's answer to Microsoft's Halo, Killzone 2 was a fantastic shooter with a decent singleplayer and great multiplayer. The game was graphically stunning, though the visual style was Gears of War cranked to 11. All in all, a fun FPS that I enjoyed and will continue to enjoy.

  • Perfect blend of 8-bit gameplay and tongue-in-cheek humor, this game was great to play on long trips or when I had a few spare minutes. And it doesn't hurt that it's based of of one of my favorite Japanese TV shows, GameCenter CX.
