What always baffled me, however, is that given all this talk recently and not-so-recently about discourse on the internet, is that GameSpot even still continues to support the System Wars forum. It's about as close as you can get to /v/ on 4chan without leaving GameSpot and even before Jeff's firing was regarded as a cesspool that moderators and staff used to cordon off the worst of the idiocy. Essentially, it seems that through various actions, the GameSpot community has evolved to the point where the predominant portion of the community was once the most undesirable factor. Somehow, the cockroaches were the ones to survive.

Yeah, System Wars is a weird one. Never really saw the need for it, since all it did was reinforce the behavior the board fostered. My guess is they're only keeping it around these days because it's practically the most active board on the site, but even that's pretty flimsy reasoning. Made more sense to have it around back when GameSpot was experimenting with a much lighter rule set. Was a lot more accommodating to such a lawless wasteland.

I wouldn't really mind the loss of physical media too much. It is really nice to have all my games loaded on a hard drive to launch instantly, not to mention the space it saves. I've already accepted it with most media, anyway, so I don't see how games would be anything different.

But at the same time, it is pretty nice to own a physical disc when you're paying $60 or more for a brand new game. Having something tangible is comforting when you're spending that much money on something. Makes it feel like a more meaningful purchase.

Slightly Off Topic but is there even an active General Discussion forum on Gamespot, or are their forums primarily just System Wars now?

There was for a brief period, but it was always just barely hanging on. Once the site redesign went live, it basically died. The board's still there, of course, but... yeah.

God reading the thread on Gamespot is cringeworthy. The people over there are the absolute worst (whoever's left anyways).

Yep. It's a real hellhole over there nowadays.

I want some one to mod Dark Souls so you can select specific servers and play with your friends. Or just think of getting a bunch of people together and having a Dark Souls lan party. Invading your friends would be amazing.

I want to say there are mods out there that do that in some form? No idea how to go about finding them, though.

Can I be lazy and just suggest poking around for a copy of The Elements of Style, by William Strunk Jr. and expanded upon by E.B. White? It's a tiny little book that you can fit into your back pocket. Well-worth peeking at if you want to improve your writing. I should probably take heed of its advice as well, actually.

Strongly recommend also picking up On Writing Well, by William Zinsser. Those two books together impart some of the best possible writing advice available.

It's all I have/listen to. Mostly because those Humble Bundles often include them.

They're attempts to put a positive spin on this are gross. You aren't obligated to do anything? Well that's just swell. Way to build some good will after the project failed. Ugh.

Just play until you think you've seen enough to write a review. Sometimes that will only take an hour or two, other times that will take 50-plus hours. All depends on the game, really. Just know when to stop playing and start writing.
