@onemanarmyy: I don't think anyone is asking for a single token minority to be put in here, but instead want a non-homogenous landscape where skin color is an aspect of their character but not a defining aspect of it.

@makayu:

Your last point is terrific. Hits the nail on the head for me.

@reverendk: I guess should of qualified my comment by saying, hey, if they weren't in the towns they might have at least been in the courts (and you do visit courts in the game), as well as some of the traders, as that link describes. I am finding it hard to find sources that mention Eastern Europe, but it understandably appears that most people's attention on the English-speaking side of the internet is pointed towards Western Europe.

@armaan8014: I feel like that however comes down more to bad writing then anything else. It feels forced because it probably was forced, creatively or otherwise, and the writers and designers didn't know how to implement it in a meaningful, smooth way. Stories can be about all types of people, and limiting them to just one race shouldn't be the norm, at least I think.

There isn't anything valuable to say that Austin didn't with his own piece and the follow-up, so I'll just say thank you Austin, and beg you to not be discouraged by the vocal minority of bad-faith-arguers on here. Great to see you tackling this

This, + the fact that it's kind of a bummer that The Witcher 3 is taking all this heat considering just how god-damn good it is. I mean, Game of Thrones has 0 p.o.c.s and GRRM describes the Summer Islanders in the book (stand ins for black people) in pretty exoticizing [is that how you spell it?] terms.

One thing that's rubbed me wrong from a lot of responses on the pro-Witcher side throughout the internet is the idea that "Oh it's based off medieval Europe, there were never people of color there," which is certainly not true and clear evidence of historical erasure. Western Europe was p tight with the Arabs for a while, taking a lot of their advanced sciences and translations which would help shape its history in the centuries to come. It's absolutely not absurd to say that there could have been a mixture, however slight, of the races (or at least some travelers...).

Wow you have no concept of European or middle eastern history do you.

You mean like the millions of white slaves in the middle east. The crusades, the ottoman conquest of Europe, the sacking of Constantinople and so on. YES there where interactions in a very VERY limited form how ever we are not talking the Byzantium Empire that borders the middle east and Europe. We are talking about a region in Northern Europe.

Hey maybe get your facts straight before you call people out on the internet?

@firecracker22: Woah what? Completely missed the homophobic quest. That's so cool they included something like that.

@firecracker22: Oo haven't got to that part yet - though I do love how often the game calls you out for trying to be a hero. I feel like one or two moments of subversion don't, at least so far, break from the lack of variety for roles for women in the side quests. Like, dudes can be werewolves and hunters and guardians of their village - so far most women have been hopelessly in love with some man, which eventually led to their doom.

And yeah, I read up on some of that stuff and think it's pretty funny. Still, cleavage is cleavage. Though the sex scenes are amazing.

It feels misogynistic in the way that pretty much every quest that involves women is about how they fell hopelessly in love with someone, or something like that. The spectrum of female side characters, as deep as Velen at least, feels much narrow than the male ones, which I think is pretty blatantly misogynistic, and not in a way that 'fits' with the world (thus is more the developers being misogynists, not their characters). That being said Keira's a pretty awesome character, and all the main ladies are pretty fleshed out, though in more ways than one. Sometimes their costumes feel like they were designed by thirteen-year-old boys...

Update: I'm pretty deep in Velen and the story is really picking up. The quests are honestly pretty amazing, easily the best writing I've seen in a game to date, and I'm getting a better handle on the XP/combat. I guess I've just never played a game that took me a good 20 hrs to get in to. But now that I am I don't want to stop...

Also holy fuck this game is huge. I feel like I've spent 20 hours in Velen alone.
