Brutal Legend Is A Must Buy Game. Period.

No Caption Provided
I know I may be a tad late on this, but I wanted to write something about my time with the Brutal Legend demo over this past weekend. First I'll say that I wouldn't have even known that there was a Brutal Legend demo available were it not for the Forza Motorsport 3 demo. the reason is that I just wasn't very interested in the game at the time. Anybody who keeps up with the games industry has at least heard of Brutal Legend and I was no exception, it's just that the things I had seen and heard did not seem very appealing to me. It also didn't help my opinion of the game when the guys were talking about it on the Giant Bombcast a few weeks ago as they too did not seem very enthusiastic about the game.

What a difference actually playing something makes.

First off let me say that from the time the demo starts you know your in for cool ride, even the menu's are cool. the opening story is hilariously awesome and the character animation is great. Jack Black does an amazing job as Eddie Riggs and seems to fit the character really well. The game (at least what I was able to play in the demo) is a 3rd person hack 'n slash with great feeling controls and cool, fun moves. You start out with a big ass double bladed battle axe called "The Separator" which does a fine job of cutting dudes heads off, and soon add a "flying - V" electric guitar to your arsenal named "Clementine". Hitting power chords on Clemetine sends out a shockwave that can knock back enemies and bring down the house, literally. Soon after you meet Ophelia, a girl who is after the Separator, and she joins you in battling evil dudes.

Soon after you come across a slab of stone with carvings that appear to be a blueprint for building a hot rod. When prompted you enter into a kind of Guitar Heroish music mini game in which Eddie plays shred-tastic solo, bringing forth the parts need to build his hotrod, the Druid Plow, or the Deuce. Eddie and Ophelia jump in the Deuce and haul ass down the road running over demons as they go. Not long after you find yourself fighting a huge worm type creature after which Eddie tells Ophelia that he will teach her what "french kissing" is.

I went from not caring one or the other about this game to it being a must have for me, all because of the demo. Makes me wonder how many other have been sold on the game by the demo. If heavy metal music were a video game, it would be Brutal Legend. Everything from the kick ass music playing in the background to the world itself just screams metal. This game also screams high production value, it's obvious that this game is a labor of love for the guys and gals at Double Fine. If you have access to an Xbox Live gold account then you owe it to yourself as someone who enjoys video games to at least try it, I think you'll very pleased with what you find.

Sweet.... sadly PSN doesn't get it till Thursday.

I'm not sure it'll change my mind about getting Uncharted 2 over Brutal Legend, however.

Plus purchasing this game shows both Double Fine and EA that folks are interested in unique games rather then just a slew of sequels on a yearly basis. (Make no mistake I like sequels, but originality in games, in any form, is a refreshing thing to see.)

I have been cooling down on the game for a while. I haven't played the demo yet so I might have to do that tonight.

This was my first pre-order, although at this point I have most of the big 'uns pre-ordered. There hasn't been a Tim Schafer game that I haven't bought.

If you're an emo crybaby or aren't into rock at all, you may not want to buy this game...

Nope.  This game was good, actually enjoyed the cutscenes, love Jennifer hale in anything! but really, the gameplay was lacking.  Sure it is violent and all, but just hacking, doing a combo here and there, platforming games are just not innovating anymore.  Now that I think about it, i wish another good Soul Reaver game would come out.

Personally, a purchase these days always comes down to two factors; either the single player length and replay-ability, or the multiplayer. Seeing as Brutal Legend will have an amazing single player with average length, and from what I have seen thus far, a somewhat tacked on multiplayer suite; this is by definition a rental for me. Its going to be awesome, but I fear for many it will be enjoyed immensely only to be  shelved and collecting dust (or, *gasp*, traded in at a fraction of it's original cost a mere month after purchase). Meanwhile games such as Borderlands and MW2 will enjoy the warmth of the disc drive due to offering a longer life span and active online communities.

On the contrary, the game started off as a multiplayer one and the single player concept didn't surface until later in development.

@juice8367: Brutal Legend will be better than both those games.

@Amorfati: You are correct. I was surprised to read this which details what you are referring to. I suppose the marketing blitz that has focused on Eddie and the story put me off base. I am curious now as to how the mass battles will feel. Still though, I'll be Gameflying this one as you always have the option to keep the title for less than retail price.

I played the demo earlier today and enjoyed it, but nothing blew me away I found the framerate to be all over the place, the animation (a bit crappy) and the sound to be of a really low quality. I know it's just an unfinished demo and that It's more about the style and the writing which is obviously going to be at the top of it's game, But I'm definately getting a whole bunch of psychonauts from it.
I LOVE Psychonauts, it's writing is clever, it's artsyle is great but man I hate playing that game, the controls are rubbish and I got the same from this. Just something simple like the axe being X/A and the guitar being X/square felt completely wrong and the car controls are absolutely  terrible.
it does have that absolutely genius title screen made up of an old vinyl record and the Hellion by the priest being the first thing I hear does make me want the game but I think its Uncharted for me come the 16th

It's strange, I saw an ad for this the other day that did more for me than the demo. Maybe it's because I've heard the demo described, and seen it played a few times, but I wanted something more out of it. Sadly though, not in a " I want more of this game, and must go buy it"
I think it also didn't/doesn't help knowing that there is a mass battle system, but not having any of that showing up in the demo. Maybe it's greedy, but if the battles are a big part of it, why limit the demo to the first ten minutes or so of the game?

I would like to get this but my money is so short at the moment I am unsure if I can even pull off Uncharted 2 or Modern Warfare 2, my current must-buy games.

After seeing this I can safely say I have no desire to make a purchase. Mulitplayer, as I mentioned earlier, is a key element for my purchases these days. I don't see that style holding up for very long at all for my personal tastes. Its comes off as an extremely dumbed down four player RTS. I'll stick with the rental for what is sure to be an awesome ~12 hours of Tim's signature laughs.

While I don't doubt that Brutal Legend will be a fantastic game, don't be sold on demos so easily. Remember Mirror's Edge?

I noticed several people saying they were having technical problems with the PS3 version of the demo which sucks because I played it on Xbox and it was fantastic. I'm hoping that the problems present in the PS3 demo aren't a sign of things to come in the full PS3 release.
