District 9 = Awesomeness

So I just got back from seeing District 9 and all I can say is "WOW".I'm completely blown away by this film.I haven't seen a Sci-Fi film this unique and thought provoking in a very long time.I also haven't seen  a film of any kind that stirred up that many emotions in a long time.I loved the documentary style of it as well. While watching I could'n't help but think how awesome the Halo film could have been.I bet those movie studios are kicking themselves for not wanting to go with Neil Blomkamp.I would love to see a sequel,District 10 anyone?

I'd love to see a District 10   and it's the best sci-fi film I've seen in a long time but it's not perfect - it has six or seven plot holes that might bother me the second time I watch it but I still love and was very much entertained and emotionally invested in DISTRICT 9.

It was okay. It wasn't an amazing film or something I'll see again or anything, though.

I've seen the trailers and it looks really awesome. I think the story itself makes it unique from any other Sci-Fi film. I'll probably go see it this weekend. Hopefully the whole movie will be as enjoyable as the trailer!

Yeah, I just saw it a few hours ago. I enjoyed it, but I would have probably enjoyed it more if my nagging brother wasn't with me.

How did everyone feel about the "documentary style" that it was filmed in,personally I really liked it but my wife hated it so I'd love to hear how everyone else felt about it.

yeah I got back from seeing it and I got some questions...

**************Spoilers!!!

Ok so I liked the movie it was good but I had some problems with it, I came out with the general  feeling that the movie was basically made to be a social commentary about what would happen to human society if Aliens showed up rather than try and follow conventional logic.

what I mean about not explaining stuff:

  • What exactly happened to the alien mothership? why exactly did they get stranded on earth? its implied that they ran out of fuel so the main alien dude Chris has been collecting that liquid stuff for 20 years however I dont understand Chris and his son decided to leave the mothership in the first place, wouldn't he just be able to order his dudes to start emptying out their machines to get more fuel so they can go back home?
  • Ok also the mini-ship/escape pod thing that Chris used to leave the mothership also ran out of fuel so ok maybe they needed 20 years to find that much fuel but then in the end they just kinda get in the mothership and leave why did the mothership get stranded here in the first place if all you needed to do was get on it and power it up?
  •  Ok so the obvious answer to those last 2 questions I raised is that that small fuel thing that Chris collected for 20 years is supposed to power the min-ship and the mothership which I find really hard to believe
  •  On a different issue, shouldn’t there have been a better military presence on the ground of district nine? I don’t get why South Africa and this private military corporation ran the show its hard to believe that the biggest militaries in the world would just let all this stuff happen

Anyway liked the movie overall defiantly refreshing and different I just wish they explained details a little better instead of being caught up in “what if” social experiments.

The documentary like interviews really pulled me out of it. Also, the love story was poorly pulled off.

It was different. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It just has some problems.. and I'm not the nitpicking type when it comes to movies.

Also interested in these plot holes. Just saw it tonight so I'm kinda' reeling, but I'm down for hearing the problems. "

SPOILERS!!!

So the plot holes I think are the film are either intentional or really are plot holes- but either way I still think  that (look below).

SPOILERS!!!

Here's the plot holes I think are in the film:

 1. How can Wikus understand Christopher (the alien/prawn) if Christopher obviously speaks a different language? So aliens can understand (human) English language? Do you have to know alien language to be hired at MNU?

2. How is it that Wikus and Christopher able to get in without any guards immediately attacking them? How did Wikus and Christopher even get to the headquarters of MNU without being spotted (especially for the alien) by the public- I mean Wikus' face was even shown at a fast food joint. Once the big bad mercenary leader and his other group of mercenaries come in, wouldn't they be more trained to kill Wikus and Christopher in like 3 minutes? The two are just standing behind a generator- why not throw a grenade? When Christopher gets distracted by one of the dead tortured prawns lying down on a table, the mercenaries come in and start to attack. How did Christopher not get shot at all? Why is it that once Christopher throws a bomb at a wall, it leads to a garage full of cars? What if the bomb just flew off the wall to a bathroom? What then? What seemed like more than 5 minutes, when Wikus and Christopher take the car they were only two people taking care of the garage and the both escape without a scrath. Wouldn't the roads be blocked off by then? I mean even the news crews responded faster than MNU's army forces.

3. How did the prawns end up in District 9? Did they beam down from their ship or were forced by the army forces to reside at District 9? If they were being watched by the government, wouldn't the government get a hold of ALL the Alien Weaponry then? It's not like Alien Weapons fell right out of that big spaceship right? How come those thugs weren't arrested if MNU knew they had guns- both human made and alien- illegally? Is it illegal to kill aliens?

4. I felt the relationship between Wikus and his wife- with the very limited time the two have together was emotional and believable- and the final scene in this film was VERY powerful. BUT it didn't make much sense to me how a Prawn would be able to escape District 10 (or District 9 I don't know, Transformed Wikus looked like he was in a dump) and made his way over to her doorstep to leave the flower with nobody noticing him outside the government sanctioned area at all.

5. Doesn't anybody from MNU look around their surroundings in District 9? If it's a concentration camp, shouldn't it be watched over than more than just ONE gate? Wikus broke in, then Wikus and Christopher breaked out, and then came back in. Heck, even before shit goes down, aliens were able to riot through South Africa. Shouldn't have MNU learn from their lesson to lock their shit down?

6. How was it that once Wikus was on the prawn's side that Christopher was intelligent enough to revolt? For 2 decades, not once alien suggested to the other aliens to revolt? There's one scene where two aliens sell that big robot (that reminded me of Aliens) and one of the two aliens are carrying an alien version of BFG. What if that alien killed all those thugs with his BFG and then took all that cat food?

7. I find it funny (and I guess this was intentional) is that the big bad mercenary leader said the operation of taking down Wikus would be smooth and quiet but completely turns the opposite throughout. I also think it was intentional from the film-makers to make the whereabouts of the prawns' origin and their planet was/what it was. I wasn't annoyed by this, I actually think it makes it a cool mystery, but I can see why some might point this out.

I thought it was just okay. It was definitely different and I did enjoy the story but I can definitely see how this movie is not for everyone. There were some things that I did not enjoy about the movie but at the same time, there were things I really enjoyed. A have a very mixed feeling about this film. I would like to see it again but not in theaters. I will wait for it to be released on Blu-Ray

 **spoilers!!

@StarFry64:

yup good questions man especially number 5 your right what kind of concentration camp is district nine how can people just come in and leave all the time?

oh with regards to question 6 yeah your assuming that Chris is the alien's hive-queen right? I wonder if thats an assumption we can make sure he ejected from the mothership in that "control ship" and he seems smarter but I am wondering if Chris is just a scientist or something and not really the big leader which would explain why he dint/couldn’t get everyone else to rebel.

Sometimes. There are some movies though that just cant be beaten as an experience as when you see it with a crowd of people.

Answering a bit late but just saw district 9 on dvd and to answer some of your plotholes you said home come they don't have much security in district 9 if its like a concentration camp, well district 9 is more of a shanty town where people can enter and leave thats how those gangs where in there but district 10 the place they want to relocate them is as Wikus describes like a concentration camp.

*** SPOILERS ***

As a huge mech fan, I'd have to say that District 9 is worth watching for the last 15 to 20 minutes alone. When the chest on that robot (which sorta reminded me of the ED-209 from Robocop) opened and revealed a cockpit, I actually shouted "FUCK YES!" God, that was so awesome..

I had this on DVD and was skipping through the movie real quick to kind of see what it was about. It turns out I never watched it because I thought the look of the aliens, and the way it is filmed, was extremely crappy. Maybe I should have gave it a chance but man, I don't think I have ever been turned off of a movie so much just by skipping through a couple chapters.

Why do people refer to others as 'the geek crowd" to justify their opnions?

Here lemme try some of that:-

TwoOneFive's comment is okay...overrated on the internet by guys like you.  ask anyone outside the TwoOneFive crowd - he's simply: OKAY

I mean seriously, is it so hard to say you do or do not like something without the need to define a group as the problem?

I thought District 9 was awesome, however I don't know if it beats Avatar for my opinion of movie of the year. It's hard to choose between the two. As Avatar made more of a lasting impression than District 9.
