F*** the Wii

So today I decided to take the family to town to do some after Christmas shopping and in doing so managed to pick up some things that I'm very happy with and at least one thing I'm not so happy with. One of the things that I'm very happy with is the Rocketfish PS3 controller. It's basically a PS3 controller that is made to look and feel just like an Xbox360 controller, which for me is great seeing as how I prefer the 360 controller. I tried it out on KillZone 2 and while it couldn't cure the general "jankiness" of that game's controls, it did make them more managable.
But the thing that I picked up that I'm not happy with is "The Conduit" for the Wii. The thing that bugs me about this game is not the game at all but rather the controls, or more specifically, the Wii remote. Trying to play an FPS on Wii is simply headache inducing. I must have played with the control settings, adjusting all levels of sensitivity, for about half an hour and still wasn't able to come away with anything that felt "right". Even with the cursor sensitivity turned almost all the way down I still had trouble aiming. I'm a big time FPS guy and really love precision aiming which the Wii remote simply does not allow for. Before buying The Conduit, the closest thing to an FPS that I owned on the Wii was Metroid Prime 3, which is really only an FPS in viewpoint, which makes the fucked up Wii controls almost acceptable (although the Gamecube controller was still much better).
I'd been thinking about buying The Conduit for some time now, but finding it for $14.99 at Target tonight made me go ahead and get it. What originally piqued my interest in the game was that it seemed to have a cool sci-fi setting and that it was exclusive to the Wii. The reason I don't own any FPS games on Wii is because before The Conduit, pretty much all FPS games on Wii were just ports of 360/PS3 games. I still think that the game has a cool vibe to it from what I have played, I just don't know if I'll have the patience to finish it because of the controls, which is really a shame. I really wish they would have given the option to just use the Gamecube controller.
In parting I would like to offer some advice to any developer thinking of trying to make a Wii game that appeals to core gamers: don't. Just make your game for Xbox360 or PS3 because chances are your gonna sell more copies on either of those platforms than you will on the Wii. Pretty much every core game made for the Wii has bombed when it comes to sales, so the logical solution would be to not make games like that for the Wii. The only games that will ever sale on the Wii are Nintendo games and 3rd party games that look like Nintendo games. I really wish that we could get games like The Conduit and Mad World on the 360 or PS3, not only because of the controls, but because I believe those games would be much more successful on those platforms.
So I'm sure I'll continue to use the Wii the way I always have which is turning it on when family or friends are over for a little casual Wii sports, but I'm giving up on "serious" games for the Wii, that's what my 360 and PS3 are for.

P.S. One of the other things I picked up while I was out was Demon's Souls for the PS3, which I'm really looking forward to trying out.

@Hailinel: Well my problem is not with the game but that I have to use the Wii remote to play it, so I guess in a way, yeah the developer is to blame for making it for the Wii. But I can't really blame them for trying to make a good FPS on the Wii.

I heard if you stick the wii remote up your ass and then try to point at the sensor bar it might work better.

wii shooters aren't the greatest.
personally, mature wii games would be more successful on the PS3 / 360.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't be on the wii, but they would be better sold on the bigger consoles, and i'd love to play murmasa on the PS3.

You can't play one game on the Wii and then make a judgement on the console. It's just not fair.

Come on now, you're a gamer. You frequent gaming websites. you should have a good idea of which Wii games are good and which are crap. I wouldn't blame a casual wii owner for being confused whenever they walk into target, but everyone on giantbomb should know better. It's no harder than avoiding the "Avatar the last airbender: The Burning Earth" on 360 or "Hannah Montana Music Jams" on PS3. Give yourself more credit. You know what you are doing.

RE4 is a port of a PS2 game that was a port of a Gamecube game, it can hardly be called an unproven property. Same with Bully. Never heard of Godfather Blackhand Edition, but why would I play any Godfather game when I can just play GTAIV or Infamous or Prototype or Saint's Row 2?

@AgentJ: I was referring more to the average consumer (as the OP presumably is for buying The Conduit). I only used my personal experience to counter his, in which I was pointing to the irrelevancy of personal experience in an argument.

At least they tried to make a good Wii FPS. Would have been better if they threw out the Wii controls for a regular one instead.

The controls are one of the few good things about that game and they work well. Ie, you just suck at it. Yes, RE4 Wii edition is the definitive version as it has the better visuals of the GC version, the extra content of the PS2 version, and incredible controls. I love how you say you love precision but tried to turn sensitivity down instead of up. Unless you have some kind of disease that causes your hands and arms to flail uncontrollably you should be able to aim just fine on anything that uses the Wii's perfectly capable pointer, whether it's a lightgun game (with 1:1 calibration available making aiming perfect just like in the arcades if you get a good gun shell), or a T/FPS game (where calibration isn't even needed as you don't aim down your remote's (nonexistent) sights, you just hold it in your lap like a normal controller and drag the cursor around as if it was a mouse using simple slight wrist movement). Also, love how you give up on Wii's serious games because you bought a shitty one. You sir are a true gamer and your advice should totally be considered by any and all developers out there. In short, fuck moronic trolling threads like this :-)

Still third party and they played better than their next gen counterparts. Some people can't play with the wii remote, simple truth. I understand that, I've seen it.

Haven't played the others, but GTA IV was a next gen pile of shit.

@Claude: Taking an already successful multiplatform game from 2 years ago then adding rudimentary motion controls doesn't count as an original Wii title. In that case developers can just port the entire PS2 library over and the Wii would have more "great third party titles" than anyone. Original and/or exclusive third party titles on the Wii that are good are in short supply, and are completely dwarfed by the quantity of quality third party titles elsewhere. Heck, even giving the Wii all of the concessions (which I tend to do since Zeus knows it needs it) and considering last gen ports such as RE4 and Bully, the number of quality third party titles on the Wii is highly lacking and the entire game industry knows this.

Keep moving them goal posts. No good serious games. No good third party serious games. No good third party serious explosion fests. No good third party serious explosionfests that I personally like more than my personal favorite game I play on my console of choice. Etc. Funny shit. Gotta love how every thread with Wii in the title ends up with the usual suspects asking for list wars even though there are already plenty of threads with information about the many great Wii games. Stop shitting up the forums doodz, you know who you are.

Only you could make such a conclusion from completely irrelevant text. Congratulations, you're special, but not in the way your mommy tells you.

PS: That was one short paragraph, far from a text brick. You should try reading a book, then a mere paragraph won't seem so long anymore.

Funny. Major developers leaving the Wii citing technical limitations and critics constantly lambasting its library must be due to random variation and not due to, oh I dunno, the actual existence of said issues. When I play Dragon Age Origins, Borderlands, Modern Warfare 2, Batman Arkham Asylum (a fraction of the games released this fall alone), the only thing I can think of is what glorious titles that I could be playing on the Wii. Oh wait.

@Al3xand3r: From the things you wrote I'm assuming that you either own or have played The Conduit, so in that case I would like to know what control setup that you used, sensitivity settings, camera mode, button layout, etc.,. I really would like to be able to play the game and enjoy it and therefore I am open to any suggestions on how to go about doing that. So if you say the controls worked fine for you then what configuration did you use?

As far as it goes I don't think The Conduit was a fair representation of the controls potential of a Wii FPS.  There are other Wii FPS games that control better.  The Conduit never feels right.

Can hardly get more major than Nintendo but anyway, keep those majors to yourself, personally I enjoy smaller developers' offerings far more. It was nice to have both major and minor together on the PS2 last gen but if I had to pick, like I have to this gen, I'd go for the minor developers. Most of my favorite games come from smaller developers or at least lower budget productions as they can be more creative without risking much. Less emphasis on hollywoodesque productions ftw. The few major offerings I'm into I can get their superior versions on PC anyway, and the few I can't don't make it worth it to get yet more systems for me when I already don't even have enough time and money to get and play all the good games of the three platforms I own. There are many great serious Wii exclusives discussed in other threads so there's no reason to keep asking Claude to list more and more games, adding more qualifications every time to prove they don't count. No, they aren't GTA or Killzone 2 but they're great.

Feel free to not like them. Feel free to not agree with this approach at all and feel free to have vastly different taste in games,  but to pretend the Wii's library is simply bad or it has no games is pretty stupid and ignorant and wouldn't really be a statement coming from any kind of serious gamer for any reason other than to start shit in a forum like this. Which is what you appear to enjoy but anyway...

And yes, there are small games on XBLA and PSN also. And there also are such small games on WiiWare, that is not what I meant. My point was games made for retail. Things like Little King's Story and A Boy and His Blob. Games that are made for retail, not made by 2 people to be sold for $10 (though I also love indie games and play them both on Wii and PC) or by a low tier team in a major developer for the same purpose (like from CAPCOM or Epic). Games that are simply by smaller yet capable in their field full fledged developers. Not that WiiWare is behind in great releases like Lost Winds, but if that was made for retail you'd expect more content from it, and many of the games I'm talking about offer that. Between the few major developers' offerings and the many smaller developer offerings both retail and on WiiWare and the Virtual Console on top the Wii's a system that can satisfy a diverse range of gamers, not just casuals. Only idiots are blind to simple facts like that and try to replace them with their own version of reality which is "Wii sux and has no gaemz" or something. Play what you enjoy, don't shit on stuff you don't as if you're some kind of gaming authority that can decide if they're any good on his personal taste alone. That's lame and nothing more than bullshit trolling.

@Calidan: What happened to just loling @ what I said? Now you've actually got questions? I rented it and cut the rental short and returned it after a couple days, the pooint is I could aim fine with all the presets and didn't even have to tweak them, though I did after a point, but don't ask me to what exact settings as I didn't memorise them by heart or something, and it doesn't mean they were the perfect setup as I didn't have the game for very long. Still, anyone should be able to aim just fine with any of the presets, the customisation is there to tweak it further to their liking and get it exactly how they want it, not to make aiming possible where it was impossible before. It's not impossible, it's easy, so you're doing something wrong there.

Ah yes the moment you get your first game on the Wii that you don't care for the in game controls, this happens to all of us. I picked up Godzilla for $5 in a clearance bin at gamestop, the controls made that game not even worth the $5 price tag. Oh lets not forget playing light gun games like Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles and not being able to turn off the aiming reticle!!! That alone killed any arcade feel that I was looking for in that Light gun game. I suggest playing the Wii for the Mario games and then just leave it there for everything else.

Funny. Major developers leaving the Wii citing technical limitations and critics constantly lambasting its library must be due to random variation and not due to, oh I dunno, the actual existence of said issues. "
Can hardly get more major than Nintendo but anyway. Keep those majors to yourself, personally I enjoy smaller developers' offerings far more. It was nice to have both major and minor together on the PS2 last gen but if I had to pick, like I have to this gen, I'd go for the minor developers. Less emphasis on hollywoodesque productions ftw. The few major offerings I'm into I can get their superior versions on PC anyway. Feel free to not agree but to pretend it's universally bad for everyone who may have a Wii is pretty ignorant and stupid. "
Right, because there's no "smaller offerings" on XBLA, PSN and Steam (Steam of which is the breeding ground for indie games). It doesn't matter if you're looking at big, small or medium, the Wii's library is simply lacking.

I'm still thinking about getting Real Heroes: Firefighter. That game spoke to me. Don't laugh... it did. The Quick Look was great, plus, new IP, new developers, low budget, but heart... heart and more.

Only you could make such a conclusion from completely irrelevant text. Congratulations, you're special, but not in the way your mommy tells you.PS: That was one short paragraph, far from a text brick. You should try reading a book, then a mere paragraph won't seem so long anymore. "
You're calling your own post irrelevant? You called the OP bad at the game and that he may have a disease. Also bricks are rectangular in nature, your post was a brick, it just wasn't a wall.

What? It's always been like this. It's us Wii robots that keep the flame alive and kill the trolling.

Irrelevant (as in, not relevant) to his conclusions, like duh? Of course.

Bricks have depth as they're physical objects so no, it wasn't a brick even if you twist it like that. How's that?

Maybe it's all of the kids on Christmas break?  I don't know.  It's weird, though.

the wii does kind of suck. comparing FPS on the wii and the xbox 360, the wii looks weird. i just think because of the way when aiming on the wii. the wii is more for causal people that don't play video games to much. they are just kind of like hey i'm having fun waving my hands around.
