Assassin's Creed Top 10

List items

  • The latest installment also ranks highest. The newly introduced RPG elements with visible numbers and stats make the hero's development and the journey's progress more apparent. The game world is by far the most detailed and coherent. Collectible junk made way for NPCs, their stories, and lore. If only the Egyptians had built more pyramids to explore!

  • After the Unity debacle, many people ignored this game or treated it lightly. It takes the failed ideas from Unity and implements them in a working and meaningful manner. All the protagonists are a joy, and so is the new grappling hook and the driving with the horse carriage. The game takes itself very lighthearted and some may find it to grotesque to incidentally stumble upon Marx, Darwin, and Dickens at the same time. But if you want a fun time with flawless gameplay and lovable characters, this is where to go.

  • The direct sequel to AC2. Mostly builds on and expands on what AC2 introduced, while also adding some new optional elements like economy management and a bit more puzzle-solving. The game just feels very rounded and satisfying. I had only wished for more emphasis on the city of Rome instead of its outskirts.

  • Many players rate this game the highest for emotional reasons. After the conceptual first game, this was the first time people played through a well-functioning AC experience. It also stands in contrast to some of the sub-par installments that followed. Moreover, Ezio is the most likable protagonist in any AC game. The game is still recommendable today, but it would be delusional to ignore that other titles have exceeded AC2 in every aspect. It also feels too arcady and aged technically worse than its predecessor.

  • This installment still stands out because it is rather different from the usual AC formula. The adventuring on and discovering of the Caribbean isles is a lot of fun. Still, the game is a bit overrated for its catering to everyone's pirate fantasies. Leveling up your ship feels tedious and grindy, and some will the lament the lack of a real hub town.

  • This game serves as a closure to AC1, AC2, and Brotherhood. The story missions set in the Holy Land are among the most emotional moments in the series. However, the game's main hub Istanbul is the most boring hub world so far, and gameplay additions like tower defense and bombs feel out of place.

  • One of the more mature settings, dealing with the ambiguity of good and evil. Objectively, this is the better Black Flag. However, as the Ubisoft formula is stretched to its limits, and the world is overloaded with junk, most of the tasks feel too much like time killers void of meaning. Also, the hero never develops much of a personality.

  • Innovative setting and arguably the best writing in the series. I never understood the hate for the protagonist: he is not your stereotypical decider, but a believable, doubting individual caught up in historical developments bigger than himself. Sadly, the emphasis on narrative makes the gameplay fall behind.

  • The first installment of the series. Incredibly repetitive, and more of a proof of concept. The setting is still unique, and the graphics are still a miracle when playing on a PC.

  • Even with most bugs fixed, Unity ends up bottom of the list. While ambitious at its time, the controls are irreversibly flawed, the mission design is frustrating, and the story makes you feel like you are missing most of the revolution that is happening around you.
