GOTY 2011

Here are my 2011 games of the year. I didn't get to play nearly as much as I have in years past, but these are stand-outs.

List items

  • I can understand the general animosity for Bethesda games and their bugginess; I had the same venom for Fallout 3 as it would crash repeatedly. However, this game is genre-defining. It's a throwback to classic dungeon-crawling in the modern gaming era. It's the game you always wish could be made and should be made. Well, it's finally here. I don't invest 100+ hours in non-MMOs anymore, but I'm 102 hours and counting into this masterpiece. And I'm anxious for more.

  • Brilliant. A remastering of the classic adventure game. As a lad, I used to play Police Quest 3 on my PC and dream of future tech to take that game from neat to awesome. This is it. The tech used for facial animations is revolutionary, and the vignettes and 1940's L.A. theme are masterfully done.

  • Not only was it a blast to watch GB tag along with SuperGiant games as they developed Bastion, but it was extra-satisfying that the game is actually worth playing. Beautiful, unique, challenging, and interesting, I also use Bastion as escapism.

  • I was kind of late to the portal scene. Sure, Portal it was kind of trendy, but I didn't enjoy it to start. I went back after the hype and started to get into it. Once Portal 2 was released, I was not really looking to more of the same. Boy, was I surprised. An excellent adventure game. I haven't even touched the multiplayer, but I hear it is equally-brilliant. Valve has done it again.

  • This little game introduced me to rogue-likes after some conversation on GB around the genre. What an excellent little game. Simple, quick, relaxing. Thumbs-up.

  • I lost a weekend to this on an iOS device when it was first released. Genius, addicting, relatively simple, quirky. I highly, highly recommend it.

  • Wow.
