2022 Game of the Year

Still working through some games in the back half of the list, so order may change.

Another year where I can't fill a top 10, but I did get to put in a lot of hours and play some fantastic games. Honorable mentions:

  • Sea of Thieves, which I played for the first time this year and had a blast with
  • Sekiro, which I played through again. Sekiro rules.
  • League of Legends, which hooked me for the umpteenth time. I have reinvented myself as a casual ARAM player, and I've had a lot of fun with it. I appreciate having a game to turn to if I need a palate cleanser or something to hold me over until the next big thing

  • This year was like most years in that I played some really high quality games that could make an argument for my "game of the year". Unlike most years, however, there was no debate as to what was my favorite game of 2022. Elden Ring hooked me from the jump and held me over for months (thank you for saving my summer). While I've been a fan of FROM Software games since Dark Souls and have fond memories across a few titles, this is the first time I sunk ~100 hours into a playthrough and also the first time I played through one of these games back to back. As I've taken on more professional, personal, and academic responsibilities these last few years, it's become very easy to drop a game an never come back. As a result, I've learned a pretty simple way to evaluate how much I like a game; did I stick with it, and how much did I play? Nothing gripped me the way Elden Ring did, and nothing commanded my time and attention quite the same way. While I could repeat many of the same sentiments found elsewhere on the internet about everything the game has to offer, it's enough for me to say that the game was awesome front to back and I really enjoyed losing myself in it. I can't stress enough how much fun I had riding around, getting into shit, trying different builds, and discovering hidden secrets.

  • I had my eye on this game for what felt like two years, but man it still surpassed my expectations. Combat was about what I expected, with some interesting wrinkles in the movement, knockbacks, and environmental damage. What I wasn't expecting was the "social-sim" in the Abbey. I had no about that side of the game until a couple days before launch, and definitely had no idea just how much time I'd spend on it. I feel like "social sim" type of games have become a guilty pleasure; I don't play them very often (last one being Persona 5 I guess), but Midnight Suns is not the first one to suck me in. Really reminds me of Mass Effect back in the day.

Based on pure fun factor, this game should be my clear-cut number two and would probably be a number one in some other years. However, I must say that there are a LOT of bugs, crashes, and stability issues right now. I stopped playing for almost a week because Captain Marvel was stuck in a side mission that crashed every single time I tried to complete it. I've had multiple crashes when trying to save over another save file, crashed during a mission, visual bugs galore, weird quirks with the interface and prompts... way too much stuff for a finished game and honestly I'm surprised that I still feel so positive about it given how much frustrating shit I experienced. It says a lot that I finished the game two weeks to the day after it was released despite missing almost a week of that time due to the side mission crash bug.

Update after second playthrough: this game would probably be my game of the year most years. I put over 80 hours into it in one month!!

  • I played this maybe 10 months ago, which feels like an eternity these days. Truth be told, it's been long enough that I can't even remember many specifics (that and I'm really tired writing this at 2 in the morning for whatever reason). I do know that Horizon Forbidden West felt like a highly polished step forward for the series, and I really enjoyed playing it. Graphics, sound, voice acting, ust a top notch production. Very fun to play and I do recall enjoying the story quite a bit - more than I thought I would.

  • Updated after beating main quest: This game did end up hooking me; the story was great and I really liked the Draupnir Spear. Bumping this game up one spot to 4th; tie goes to Horizon since I don't remember putting it down at all (I had two Midnight Suns playthroughs sandwiched in the middle of Ragnarok).

Original post: I am about 10 hours into this and had it at the bottom of this list before changing my mind while writing the blurb for Gran Turismo 7. Surprised to say that I think God of War Ragnarok is just "fine" so far. I really loved the first game (my 2018 game of the year), and I don't know what to think about this game's inability to blow me way so far. It just feels like more of the same, which isn't inherently bad (especially when the first game was so good). I just keep waiting for something to hook me, and it hasn't happened. It seems good... but I'm staring to wonder if it will ever click for me.

I've gotten through Alfheim, so I'm not right at the beginning, but my understanding is that this game is really long so I'm not surprised if I am still pretty early. I'm willing to be proven wrong, and will continue giving the game a shot, but right now it's just been average. I would say it's been disappointing so far, but I really can't pinpoint anything it does worse than the first one... just feels like I haven't seen it do much better, or different really.

  • Need to go back and finish this game, but it's basically a much improved version of Kingdom Battle from a few years ago. The combat is in the same vein as that game, but has evolved in some interesting ways. The overworld stuff, while still somewhat simple, has been improved quite a bit. I was really enjoying my time and got busy with school, work, and other games. Hoping to come back and beat this one before long; I don't see it rising on this list, and it may fall below God of War - we'll see.

  • Not much of a racing guy but decided to buy a wheel to play this game for whatever reason. The game itself is really well done - driving feels great, and the presentation (graphics and sound mainly) is amazing. I think racing games just aren't my thing - I got a little over 10 hours, had a tonsillectomy, and never came back. The racing wheel has been folded up against my wall for nine months now.
