Best of 2014

Now I just have to keep playing 10 games released in the calendar year...

List items

  • I can only imagine how 18th and 19th century settlers felt when they saw cleared field where there was once an army of trees. I was super late to the Minecraft party, but no game gave me as much satisfaction and sucked more time out of my day than Minecraft. The improved draw distance on the xbox one makes the game infinitely more satisfying as you survey your progress in the world.

  • The humour misses more often than not, but the game's commitment to a unique style can not be denied. Mall punk aesthetics not your thing? Make your character look like Miami Vice. Breaking Bad references a little to on the nose? Just wait till the larpers come along. This game was the reason I got an xbox one and it did not disappoint.

  • This is the best Rogue-like I have ever played because of the upgrade paths. No matter how shitty a run might have been you are usually able to collect enough gold to upgrade something. Go play this game.

  • I had not played a Mario Golf since the N64 and Game Boy Colour days. Most interesting to me was the fact that this game tried to ape the RPG golf club mechanics of the GBC game (although they failed to make a system that feels robust in its own right). Still a fantastic game with tried and true gameplay mechanics that will keep your entertained for a long while.

  • I have played 50 hours of multiplayer as of March 11, 2015. In addition, the campaign was fun as hell and Kevin Spacey chews scenery like no one's business. The main reason I enjoyed this game so much is because the added movement options give less skilled players a means to get the jump on some salty grognards.

  • I bought this game out of excitement and a misplaced sense of patriotism. It took my quite a while to actually get into the rhythm of the game, but once I did I fell in love with the game mechanics and style. Like, c'mon, the commander knocks Montessori schools at one point. How can you not love a game that does that.

  • My sister and I bought a Wii U exclusively for this game and we agree that is was money well spent. I can not have a Ryckert level of enthusiasm for Mario Kart 8, but that does not mean I don't enjoy the hell out of it. The tracks are great, the art style looks great in HD, and the online is impeccable (especially by Nintendo standards). Rubber-band AI or no, you should stil play Mario Kart 8

  • I have been chewing through the novels since Christmas and am fully enamoured with Westeros. While the first episode was the only one available in 2014, I am confident in saying that this is one of the best games I played all year. The first episode adhered to the overall structure of the books and tv show (surprise surprise the ending is a shocker) which is a little rote , but still appreciated. The illusion of choice is glaringly obvious (especially after completing the second episode), but I love the universe too much to care.

  • It is March 2015 and I still play this from time to time. Fantastic way to kill time when your phone is the only entertainment at your disposal. Marmalade dog all fucking day!

  • I should have placed this game higher because I eventually crossed the much discussed threshold where the game finally felt realized. I collected every collectible, finished every challenge, and shanked Uruks for hours on end. The story is total garbage (I honestly could not tell you a single thing about it), however, that does no impede your ability make hours upon hours vanish. While the graphics do not make a great first impression (dat game be grey for the first half) they become much richer in the second half. This is a great game and I am sorry I did not place it higher.
