@paulunga: A few reasons for that. By all accounts, it's a very well written Visual Novel. It's also a subject matter is not only very meme-y at the moment (dads) but also an underserved one (gay male romance). But the biggest reason is probably due to the co-developer being Vernon Shaw, previously of Hot Pepper Gaming and now part of the wildly popular Game Grumps youtube channel. Due to the comedic nature of both of those shows, I think a lot of people assumed this would be a parody of dating simulators, but as people have discovered that it's actually genuinely sincere, high quality take on the genre, the community has embraced it.
Klepek posted a great write up over on Waypoint. If a visual novel manages to hold Patrick's attention, it probably has a lot more going for it than your bog standard waifu-courter.
Man, and I thought spending too much time curating my Stepmania stepfile collection and tweaking LUA files to get the UI to look just right was a dark and scary road.
I kinda agree with Jeff that keyboard is a subpar way to play Stepmania unless you're one of those insane AGDQ guys but until I can justify the cost of a dance pad I'm kinda stuck with it. I really dig how active the Stepmania scene is though. Ben Speirs' SPEIRMIX collections are astounding in quality. Playing DDR with modern pop music video backgrounds was something I didn't know I wanted.
@soloskywalker: There was a few days in college where I skipped classes to play Burnout Paradise for hours at my friend's apartment with every song turned off EXCEPT Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend."
@dreiszen: Well, guess what, today you are that person. Personally, I think all you really need is permadeath, a run-based gameplay loop, and randomized elements that encourage exploration and experimentation. I'm curious to know what primary element of rougelike design you feel is missing regardless of this game's overall quality.
