There should be more games based on novels.

Whenever a novel gets made into a movie, the book is always the better version. For example, Jurassic Park, The Road, or even Lord of the Rings. The reason why books are usually better is because you can't take a 200-500 page novel and make a 2 to 3 hour movie. Parts of the story have to be cut out and ignored or covered by a couple minutes of dialog. There is valuable character development and world establishment that is sometimes glossed over or left on the cutting room floor. Movies are not the best medium to bringing a novel to life. Movies are just too limited by reality and/or the special effects available at the time. That is why so many video games that are turned into movies are utter crap. The film medium is just not capable of bringing game worlds to life. In my opinion, the best medium to bring a novel to life is through video games. No other way can you bring a world to life and actually interact with it. Games today seem to slack on the story and focus on more action/gore/cover mechanics (and multi-player). Basing a game on a novel would have a good and well written story to start with.
For example, let me explain how one of my new favorite books could easily become a video game. This book was optioned for a movie, but it never materialized.
The book is Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.
The book takes place in a cyberpunk and dystopian world where the human consciousness can be digitized. Your entire personality, memories, emotions, and everything else about you is stored in a computer chip called "stacks" implanted at the base of the skull. The human consciousness becomes the most important thing since a person can be downloaded into new bodies called "sleeves". This creates an interesting scenario for existence. If the body dies, the stack can be stored indefinitely and then redownloaded into a different body. While most people can afford to resleeve at the end of their lives, a good number of them do not. Only the extremely wealthy can effectively be immortal since they can afford to download their consciousness into as many bodies as they want.
The main character is Takeshi Kovacs an "envoy" who is basically a special forces trained mercenary. He is trained to be a killer, an investigator, a soldier, and observer. He was trained specifically to be able to be downloaded into a new sleeve and be able to function immediately without suffering any of the side effects that comes with getting reacquainted with the new body. Without going too much into the story, Takeshi is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of one of the richest men on earth. A man by all regards had no reason to kill himself. The plot follows Takeshi as he follows one lead after another and the consequences of his investigation. The book is extremely violent, has graphic sex scenes (I'm sure fox news would love this), and always keeps you guessing on how it's going to end. It is a very good noir cyberpunk detective story and I think it would make a great game.
I will spoil the first chapter of the book however...
The game could be a third person action/rpg since there is room for character development through the story and would involve dialog trees and other non violent methods to get through different situations. It could even start as an "abilitease" since the very first chapter starts (SPOILERS) off in a hotel room. Very soon after you get used to the room, the controls, and the dialog trees; the cops bust through the door. Takeshi then has to fight off the cops only to get shot through the chest and die. (END SPOILER). It is between this body and being downloaded into the next one that Takeshi learns of his new employer and then sets off on his new mission (maybe even have a late title here?).
There is plenty of action in the book to have a decent third person shooting gameplay while also having plenty of detective work to have enough dialog trees. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a Mass Effect type of game. If you die, it's ok since your stack can always be downloaded into a different body or even a clone of your existing one.
Richard K. Morgan wrote two sequels to Altered Carbon and each one has Takeshi in a different role for a different employer. The second book has him serving as a soldier in an army and the third book has him working for himself. In each book, he is in a different, and often, multiple sleeves. The world and the main character are so dynamic that Takeshi can basically fill any role as long as he can kill people.
Maybe its the fact that this world almost seems like it was written to be a video game, but I think that video games are missing out on making games out of novels.
(This ended up being longer than I expected)
tl;dr - Altered Carbon, a book about a cyberpunk world where the human consciousness can be downloaded into multiple bodies. The main character, a special forces agent who is trained to be able to be downloaded into a new bodies without any side effects, is hired to investigate a suicide. The mystery, violence, and sex of the novel would make a great game.
