Where does Halo: Reach come off?

I saw a commercial for Halo: Reach and at the end it claimed it was the "Most anticipated game of 2010".  Seriously?  Where do they get the balls to even suggest such a thing?  I can think of two games right off the top of my head that are probably more anticipated and have a bigger player base than Halo:Reach.  Starcraft 2 and Civilization V. I'm sure there are more, but I felt the need to point this out.

Because it will crush both of those highly anticipated games sales-wise?

As far as "where they get the balls"? I think they grew those balls over years of ridiculous levels of success.
Whether an individual is a fan or not, one should understand that they've earned those balls.

well, starcraft and civ fans may be more dedicated, but halo:reach is more known. a lot of people who aren't gamers know about halo, simply because it's become that big. as for starcraft and civ 5, i barely saw commercials for them.

I could say the same for Halo: Reach.  Aside from this month, I haven't seen anything about that game.  There were commercials for Starcraft 2, not to mention  the decade of time between the games to create anticipation.  And Civ V doesn't need any commericals.

Heh. right.  It's kinda funny since I don't see that tag line on the commercials anymore.

If you think about it, it doesn't have all that much to compete with in terms of popularity. Starcraft is big in the PC world, but that's it. Civilization's even less popular than Starcraft. The only other game that I think can come close this year is Call of Duty: Black Ops.

I guess my point is anticipation is created by the length of time in development plus the demand.  Starcraft definitely has it since the last game was released so long ago.  Civ has it since it's been years since the last Civ game.  It seems like that last Halo game was released not too long ago.   Therefore there can't be as much anticipation for it as the other two.

On a side note, it seems like "most anticipated game" is turning into "game of the year".  A title given out to multiple games during the same release window.

If you go by advertising, then every game with even the slightest bit of notoriety is the best, hottest, most anticipated game ever.

@Soapy86: Actually, claiming Halo: Reach as "the most anticipated games of 2010" is far fetched. Since Halo Reach's pre-orders practically demolish StarCraft II's. That being said, it's my third anticipated game of 2010. Second being Epic Mickey (Because it's made by Warren f***ing Spector) and number one being StarCraft II.

Joe Public doesn't care AT ALL that it's been ten years since the last Starcraft game. You're measuring anticipation in the hardcore, completely missing the point. Loads of people for whom gaming is a quick distraction that they only occasionally indulge in will play Reach. Halo's big in the hardcore AND in the mainstream. Starcraft and Civ V are both extremely specialized, hard core games.

Sorry bro, they're probably right.

Actually I have a degree in marketing.  If I was in charge of creating the ad campaign for the game, I don't think I would include that little blurb.  It's unrealistic and it opens the door for argument.  The game is anticipated but no where near the level of Starcraft.  I would think that any gamer, the target audience the commercial is trying to reach, would know that.

Well considering Halo 3 sold about as many copies as the whole Civilization franchise I would say its pretty safe to say Halo Reach is more anticipated than Civ 5. Starcraft 2 is more of a challenge but I would say that Halois the most anticipated game this year.

What I fail to understand is how would you explain to someone that Starcraft 2 is actually the most anticipated game of the year?
And after Reach outsells Starcraft 2 by millions of copies, how to you defend the explanation you gave?

Starcraft 2 has been anticipated for 12 years, before the halo series existed. Starcraft 2 is more anticipated, Halo: Reach will be more popular.

I wasn't saying that Halo: Reach will flop or that Starcraft will outsell it.  Just that Reach isn't the most anticipated game this year.  Anything with the Halo name on it will sell fantastically.

Yes, and obviously the people making the ads for Halo: Reach should have taken that into account, seeing as how "anticipation" is an objectively measurable quality. Every anticipation by a Starcraft fan is easily worth 2.33 (repeating of course) anticipations by a Halo fan.

Well, everything will turn out alright when negative reaction results in the sales of Halo: Reach tanking and those responsible for perpetrating this horrendous crime are put away for the rest of their natural born lives.

But WAIT. If there are X amount of Starcraft fans anticipating, and more than 2.33X amount of Halo fans anticipating, then REACH IS THE MORE ANTICIPATED GAME.

Halo Reach has more pre-orders this month, than GT5 has had in.. how many years?
" @Blueman said:

Well that says more about your gaming habits than anything else.  Reach has been hyped up pretty seriously with the live action trailer, the beta a few months back and now TV commercials.  I'm sure if you talk to many other gamers, they wouldn't even know what Civ V is, let alone that it's coming next month.  As for it being the most anticipated game of 2010..  That again depends on your view point.  I personally don't care about Starcraft in the slightest, and I don't see why years of waiting from a select group of hardcore gamers makes it 'more anticipated'.

And again, it's just a PR tagline.  If you've honestly studied marketing, I don't know why this would bother you at all.  As a fellow marketing graduate I always cringe when I see shampoo comercials that claim things like "9/10 women agree.." when you know how horrible skewed those figures are and that it essentially means nothing.  But come on, it's done to sell the product.

Also, the last Halo game that was released not too long ago that you're likely refering to was ODST, which is actually an expansion.
The last Civ IV expansion was also released not too long ago.

If we're talking about marketing, then we're talking about about sales during the year 2010 in the regions this commerical is being shown.
If we're talking about sales, we'll have to wait until real sales numbers come in but the original Starcraft's success was based on long term sales, where Halo is a week-one juggernaut.

Meanwhile, we're talking about anticipation, an unmeasurable variable. One that I personally believe both Starcraft and Halo have more than enough marketing data to construct a convincing argument out of (that's all I'm really trying to say). You could sensibly throw Gran Turismo into this mix as well, but I don't think the Civilization franchise would build a convincing argument.

It's a habit of mine to constantly question commercials when I see them.  When I saw the tag line I immediately turned to my wife and said  "I can think of at least two games right now that are more 'anticipated' than Halo:Reach"  I know it is just the tag line, but it is one that I find highly questionable.  I didn't know that Reach had such a build up before the commercials started running so maybe I am just underestimating the "reach" of this game.  All I know for sure is that it is another Halo game where the last one was released not too long ago.

@TekZero:  It's the same thing as games getting "Game of the Year" editions where no site at all besides somebodys shitty personal blog gave it that honor.
