The Games That Nearly Made It

The problem with doing a final selection of your favourite games ever, is that titles are bound to get missed. Awesome games that were brilliant, but just not brilliant enough to make the top ten. Here are mine.

...bearing in mind I've probably missed more!

This list is in rough chronological order.

List items

  • (2000) My other favourite FF. The only reason this is here is because FFX defined my taste in games for years to follow - FFIX came after. Still a perfect little RPG gem that is unfortunately undercut by the love for FFVII everyone seems to have.

  • (2004) The narrative is original, the setting was dark, and the soundtrack was breathtaking. Shame that so much of the gameplay failed, and the fact that this was never meant to be a Silent Hill game.

  • (F.E.A.R. 2005, F.E.A.R. 2 2009) A great mix of shooter and horror, and a brilliantly dark story to go with the complete terror - I don't know how anyone would miss this.

I have not included F.3.A.R. That game should never have seen the light of day.

  • (Portal 2007, Portal 2 2011) Portal is amazing, the first one was the most ingenious little puzzle game I'd ever played - with such witty, dark humour to boot. Portal 2 was a worthy successor, and gave us the brilliant Cave Johnson. He does not want your damn lemons.

  • (Dead Space 2008, Dead Space 2 2011) The last time a game scared me half as much as Dead Space was back when I watched my brother play Resident Evil in 1996. I was six years old. The first game made me frightened to go to sleep, where Dead Space 2 made me lose trust in everything around me. Stunning games. Brilliant mindfucks.

  • (2008) Such fond memories of playing this in my old uni room. A great post-apocalyptic RPG that stands up to the first two brilliant games - if a little short (before the introduction of the DLCs) and low on NPC charisma.

  • (2009) I've loved Batman ever since I was a kid. Arkham Asylum is dark, gritty, and gives a great revisioning of the Dini Batman that I feared was lost to the 90's.

  • (2009) Adorable strategy game involving horticulture and the undead. Yes. Brilliant.

  • (2010) Not a game, but more of an interactive story. Wonderful concept, gripping story, just, not really a game - but don't let that stop you getting hooked in!

  • (2010) The best remake of a Pokemon game - Johto plus all the 493 Pokemon from the other generations at your disposable. I was very disappointed to see that walking Pokemon (introduced in these games) weren't an option in Black & White.
