Jester's GotY 2021

List items

  • My unexpected game of the year, I have never considered myself a big fan of the Metroid games only playing a few games in the series like Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, I found myself addicted to the tight controls and fast gameplay of the new title. As of writing this list I have played through the game 4-5 times, each time getting faster times and getting better at performing the various tricks to make each play through feel unique each time. Possibly a modern classic that I can see myself revisiting like I do with other games I love like Super Mario World, Earthbound, and Zelda: A Link to the Past.

  • The Highly anticipated sequel to the cult classic psychonauts. I was pleasantly surprised to see double fine once again making a great video game. Psychonauts 2 is everything that a sequel should be, expanding on the concepts of the first game, getting more into the sordid past of the main cast of characters, improving on the gameplay, and weaving a fastastic tale about healing the mental wounds of the past. Psychonauts 2 is everything that I wanted it to be.

  • The Final Cut, the definitive edition of what could be the best written game of all time, with a grip of new content, and full voice acting performed by professionals instead of a cadre of leftist podcasters, the new version is sometime I can see myself revisiting over and over. Looking forward to my fascist and moralist play-throughs in 2022. I still spend a lot of my time away from the game thinking about the world and characters.

  • Picked up Shining Pearl on a whim after my girlfriend picked up Brilliant Diamond for her switch, and I have been running my poor lite's battery down to death playing it on the bus and during breaks at work since then. After not playing a Pokemon game in what feels like a decade since the original Black and White versions on the DS, catching monsters is just as fun as ever, with a lot of smart changes like being able to access your Pokémon boxes almost anywhere, it's online features just being a button away, auto-saving, and no longer having to keep a water and flying type on your team at all times just to use Surf and Fly respectively it is definitely one of the most pain free Pokemon games to date.

  • Part 2 of Toby Fox's Magnum Opus, while it is not a complete game, playing chapter 2 still sticks out as one of the best games that I have played this year. With a sharp sense of humor, memorable characters, challenging bosses, and a overarching story that includes mysterious actors at the edges that get me imagining where the plot could possibly go, I cannot wait to see the rest of Deltarune.
