@squirrelnacho: Hey, I'll accept that as fair criticism, but really, I can't think of a word which expresses the situation more succinctly.
A lot of the systems the game depends on are archaic. That's fine, it is an older title, but a the tone of comments especially on the initial session's videos were outright exasperation at the lack of familiarity with them on the part of the team.
As for the manual, I ended up in comment chain on a previous video where I was informed that it was required reading. Who knows.
@vinny: Hey man, it's cool to see you in the comments on this one even if the topic is kind of a bummer. You'll definitely run into a lineup of Shenmue apologists in these comments, "Check the manual" they cry out.
I just wanted to say that, as someone with no nostalgia for this game that, this series has been an enjoyable way to experience it for the first time, and the way you've picked up the games systems has felt like a pretty natural progression.
The Dreamcast really was the last point at which games could still use the excuse of "You didn't check the manual".
Championship Edition was the first (2007) of the modern Pac-man games out of Namco. DX came out in 2010, and DX+ was additional content for DX in (2013). DX built on Championship Edition, but CE2 doesnt seem to have retained the best features of DX.
@lmitchell8075:The general thrust of their complaints seems to be about pacing - under a thick crust of general lack-of-polish.
Pacing is hard, but every gating mechanic seems to be a worst case scenario. That story mission which needed level and side-content completion? Ideally the story mission wouldn't have been offered up until those requirements were met elsewhere.
Once you know you need to do more of something to progress, it becomes an obligation.
@shtinky: @gregalor: That's a sentiment I can agree with, Austin was very good at trying to take in a game on its broad merits in order to present them to the viewer.
The manual is great but it's only reinforced my opinion of the game - some great assets made to a high standard, but not presented in a focused manner.
A disincentive can be as simple as the few seconds you spend talking to someone who cant help you. Compare it to something like a Bethesda RPG where they could at least talk to you about another interesting questline. For all that Shenmue is an openworld, the NPCs are as story focused as Vinny and co.
